Details on Little A’s Vintage Room

I shared Little A’s Vintage Room last week on the blog.  Your comments were so sweet and encouraging to me, thank you!  So I thought today I’d share a few of the details and cost breakdown for the room.   Most of my bedroom makeovers that I’ve done, I have tried to do for $200 or less.  The bub’s first room was my first attempt at a children’s bedroom and the total was just under $200.  His second bedroom came in around $170.  This room might come in a little higher but we’ll see how I did!

One of the best changes I made was spray painting the metal bed frame.  Here is a before with the white, chipped look going on after being abused used by my children for the past 5 years.

Using lots of elbow grease to sand down the frame where it was drippy from it’s last paint job (the hubby’s first and last attempt at spray painting), two cans of primer and two cans of Rustoleum warm yellow spray paint, she’s looking sunny and lovely in yellow.

The embroidery hoops were all purchased from Hobby Lobby or Jo-Anns for an average of $1 each.  The fabric inside the hoops is from vintage sheets and was purchased from Shabby Sheets on Etsy for $10 with shipping.  I spray painted the outsides of the hoops white using spray paint I already had on hand and added the two candle wall sconces which I also already owned. Grand total for embroidery hoops and fabric $17

Above the desk I wanted a place for little A to be able to hang up her drawings and maybe pin some fun photos or whatever catches her fancy.  I found this cork board at Savers for $1.99.  I recovered it by stapling some yellow gingham fabric from Hobby Lobby for $3.50.

The two smaller boards on each side of the cork board were pictures we had from a previous bedroom.

I recovered both of the pictures by stapling them with left over fabric from the embroidery hoops and then used velcro adhesive to adhere the giant clothespins.  I already owned the clothespins as well so these two picture frame boards were free

The lamp and shade came from Target, with a coupon the total was $13.

I added pom-pom trim that was $1 from Hancock Fabrics to the shade with my glue gun, total $14.

The curtains were probably my biggest expense.  The fabric was $30 for four yards from Fabric.com with free shipping.  I used this tutorial from Tip Junkie on making lined curtains.  I purchased two twin size flat sheets from wal-mart for the lining, $10.  Total for curtains, $40.   This is a glimpse of the curtains,  my sewing skills and photographing things near brightly lit windows are less than stellar so I think it’s better if we just go with this photo.

I spray painted her curtain rod white with spray paint I already owned, total, free.  I found sticking the rods into the ground and spray painting them like this was super easy.  After they dried I then laid them across some cardboard boxes and spray painted the ends that were in the ground.

The chipboard letter A was purchased for $1.50  from Hobby Lobby.   A piece of paper from a vintage Nursery Rhyme Book cut to shape was the perfect vintage look for this letter, cost $1.50.

These wall plaques were $2 each from Savers.  Looking a little dated in brown I knew that some color could really make these cute!

A quick coat of green spray paint in Eden by Rustoleum and voila, fun vintage looking wall plaques for $4!

I debated using the quilt my grandma made as the bed covering and folding up the coverlet at the end of the bed instead, this picture is before all the details were finished up.  What do you think?  Maybe for the winter I can change it up when it gets cold and snowy!

Well that just about covers everything I can think of in her room.  If you aren’t sleeping by now, Congratulations on making it through this post!   As a reward, here’s a look at the finished room one more time.

Now it’s time to add it all up and see how I did.

Bedroom Cost Breakdown:

Paint $41

Bedskirt $6

Coverlet $40

Curtains $40

Sewing Desk $7

Drum Stool $20

Pillow TJ Maxx $15

Spray Paint & Primer $15

Lamp $14

Clock $7

Letter A $1

Cork board & fabric $6

Embroidery Hoops & Fabric $17

Picture over Dresser $3

Butterfly placques $4

TOTAL= $236

There you have it, the breakdown and some details on Little A’s vintage bedroom.   I think I covered just about everything I painted, modified or made for her room.  If you have any more questions or want to know about anything else, I would be happy to help you out.

Happy St. Patty’s Day & Other Randomness

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR OF THIS BLOG:  A GLASS Of wATER WAS SPILLED ON THE LAPtop KEYBOARD last week and now the keyboard is funky.  tHE PERSON WHO SPILLED THE WATER SHALL REMAIN NAMELESS, ANGE AS it was an accident.  Tech Support (Alex) though buying a keyboard that we could plug into iT WOULD SOLVE THE ISSUE BUT NOW THE CAPS KEEPS GOING ON AND OFF RANDOMLY AND IT’S MAKING IT EXTREMEly difficult to type this post out.  I give up laptop, you win!   SO IF YOU FEEL LIKE I AM SHOUTING AT YOU, I AM NOT, PLEASE BEAR WITH ME AS IT LOOKS LIKE WE WILL BE BUYING A NEW LAPTOP THIS WEEKEND.

Moving  my blog to WP and having my blog redesigned was very exciting but it has put me way behind in the blogging world.  I hAVe 600 blog posts in my reader waiting for me but I doubt I will be able to get to them.  I am still figuring out the comment thing on here and have a few posts rolling around in my head but the beautiful weather has been calling instead.  I did manage to finish up all my tabs except for the About Me which I am hoping to do tomorrow.  So if you haven’t had a chance yet, click on the For the Heart, For the Home OR THe Blooming Blogger tabs.

Today is the Ruby dog’s birthday, she’s one years old today.  I tried to find some pics of her but she’s camera shy.  We did manage to get these horrible pictures of the dogs in St. Patty’s gear the other day,  Heidi was just at the groomer so she had a snazzy little cover bandana on.    It was a challenge to capture these photos without the headband falling off and them looking at the camera.   So sorry for the poor photo quality, obviously I won’t be entering the working world as a  pet photographer anytime soon.  And after we were done, Ruby then proceeded to eat the headband to let us know she didn’t like it.

The weather has been absolutely beautiful here, which I was unprepared for so early in the spring.  We have no sandals, only the bub’s has flip flops and I have leftover summer clothes from last year for two out of three girls which is slim pickings as it is.  Our eldest daugther and the bub’s have nothing, at all.   Thank you 30% off at Kohls for helping us get a few items.   While there I did find some coral sandals for myself, I have a slight obsession with this color right now as evidenced my by toe nail color.  Does everyone think that feet are ugly or is it just me?

So I am on the search for cute comfortable sandals that I can wear to take the kids to the park and this summer while on vacation.  Do these type of sandals exist?  I have a high arch in my foot so they can’t be real flat either.  Someone let me know where I can find this elisuve sandal THAT DOESN’T COST $100.  I”M SURE I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE LOOKING for this type of shoe!

Look what I picked up off of craigslist in the past week!  I saw this cool stool and had to have it!  Scored this baby for $20 WHICH I THOUGHT WAS A GOOD DEAL.

YESTERDAY I GRABBED THIS SIDETABLE FOR $5, I LOVE IT AND it’s in the garage awaiting it’s new paint color which is still undecided but i am pretty sure this is going in the family room.  I love the mirrored top and the great detail oN THE DRAWER FRONT.  THANK YOU JOHN WHO IS MOVING AND DIDN’T WANT TO take this with.

So the laptop is really giving me a hard time and as much as I want to blog some more, I think I better hit publish before it crashes all together!  After restarting the computer the caps lock is behaving but I’m having other issues now.  I hope to be back in a few days with a giveaway and a blog post that contains beautiful pictures and no shouting.  Happy St. Patty’s Day!

Target + Goodwill= Happy Ange

A few days ago the bub’s and I were out running some errands and I decided we should stop into Goodwill. Did you know that Target brings their clearance to Goodwill?  Not sure if all Goodwills get this deal or not but mine does.
While browsing the store I saw a beautiful Target box that held a toy organizer but a lady was already looking at it. She walked away and then dropped her coffee all over the floor so while she was distracted, I looked at the box,  saw the price tag

grabbed that box and threw it into my cart. Then we ran for the checkout before someone tried to steal it from us. The bub’s was excited because he thought the bins came filled with the toys on the box. It was probably a little disappointing for him when I opened the box at home and there were only the bins and other pieces, no cool toys. The only thing wrong with the organizer was that one pole was a tad bit shorter than the others but I made it work and you can’t even see it because it gets covered up by the bins..

After we assembled it,  he was really excited to help me fill it with his toys and then he proceeded to play with his toys for a long time. Not only was this organizer a steal of a deal, it also made the bub’s toys appear fun again.

While visiting Target with my fam on Saturday I came across my Goodwill toy Organizer and was shocked at the price!

Yup, that is the same exact one we have at home for only $10!

Of course this has my wheels turning and I’m thinking about the bub’s room.   This piece was just what I needed to get the room started.   Right now the walls are a dark greenish blue color and I’ve been saying since we moved in that I need to paint his room.  Today the stars aligned for me at Menards while I was browsing for a blue paint color and wasn’t find anything.  I walked past the mismatched $5 gallon paint section and there was a blue that matched the pale blue bin perfectly!  Five dollars, yes please!  So I’m thinking my next room is the little dude’s room!  So far I have $15 in it and I’m hoping with another $50 I can finish it up.  I found a few pics on Pinterest the other day, this one is my favorite.

Find any good deals lately?  Maybe a great find at Goodwill?  Target clearance?  Tell me!

Thrift Store Score!

Last week I posted some pics of the family room. The one thing that this room is missing is lighting. Ok, it has lighting but I am talking about lighting that doesn’t look like giant adjustable eyeballs in the ceiling.

The lamps are kind of sparse in our house right now, there are two in our master bedroom which used to reside in the family room.  If you remember, I found these lovelies at Savers, they ended up getting a spray paint job and new lampshades that were Target clearance finds.
The other pair of lamps in our home are from Target and were on clearance, of course!  They have been in the master bedroom and now currently reside on the blue console/buffet/dresser in the Living Room turned Dining Room.  The black lamps are on the smaller side but they work well right now for us as there is no other lighting in that room which we’ll discuss in another blog post.
How convenient that both sets of lamps are in this one picture.

The hunt for lamps has been ongoing for the past few months but I’ve not found anything that tripped my trigger.  That is until today!  Today at Savers I found this beauty all by herself.   I was really hoping she had a mate but maybe she’s recently divorced or perhaps she was always a single gal, I guess I will never know.

I think I have found the perfect spot for her, what do you think?

Only $4.99 and it’s not something you can find at Target or Pottery Barn plus I don’t have to paint it or do anything, she’s perfect the way she is.  Have you found any thrift store beauties lately?

Covert Operation Christmas Gift has begun!

Hello, it’s me Ange, playing Santa’s elf today.   I bet you hardly recognized me, right?  I know, clever disguise.

This is a covert blog post, I don’t think my kids usually read my blog but you never know!
My children have been asking for a play kitchen since we moved and it even ended up on their letters to Santa. We had a primitive kitchen that we made out of things we had laying around the house and we really had fun making this as a family while using our imaginations.

They did enjoy playing with it but when it was moving day, we left it behind, we had no room left, at all.   We also left behind our coffee table and maybe a few more things as well.
While browsing pinterest I came across a few kitchens made out of entertainment centers.

I showed the ideas to the kids and they loved them!  They think I’m still searching Craigslist for an entertainment center so we can make this.  Little do they know, I already found one and it’s in our garage.  So we’ve been hiding it in our garage under a tarp and the kids haven’t asked what is under the tarp.  (They probably think their crazy mom is just finding more furniture to paint).  Today my hubby hauled it inside and I’m going to prime it and then we are hauling it back out to the garage, back under the tarp again until tomorrow or Thursday when we haul it back in for more painting.
This thing is a beast, no particle board wal-mart style here, it’s solid wood baby!  The best part though, it was FREE!

Operation Entertainment Center turned Kitchen has begun!  Stay tuned for more covert updates!

PS:  We are on the lookout for a faucet and burner knobs if anyone has any, send them my way!

Master Bedroom Update, thank you Craigslist!

After painting the trim and the stripes in the closet I lost the vision for the master bedroom.  It’s been just kind of blah but this past weekend Craigslist came through and now the vision is back!

Can you believe I scored this dresser, for free?  That’s right peeps, someone didn’t want this anymore and I found it at 2am so I emailed them.  They sent out a blanket email at 7 am to all 35 people that emailed them regarding the dresser.  I woke up at 8:30, read the email, called them and said, I’ll be right there!  I couldn’t believe it was still available.  My hubby, who loves his sleep, was so awesome to get up and go with me to get the dresser.  I knew that he’d rather sleep than load up a dresser but he loves me more than sleep.
I have been looking for a throw to add to the end of the bed and managed to scoop up a chunky chenille throw on Saturday at Target for $20.  Even if it doesn’t stay there long term, I love the blanket and I can always use it elsewhere in our home.   I decided the lamps from the family room look really good in our bedroom so I stole them from the console but now that I look at the picture, maybe some thicker, girthier lamps would be better.  And yes, girthier is a word  I just made up.  Now I will have to head back to Savers or Goodwill and find new lamps to spray paint for the family room or my bedroom.

It’s impossible to take pictures with kids or dogs in them.  Really.  I also added my federal mirror above the bed, that’s the start of the gallery wall.  Maybe.  After putting the dresser at the end of the bed we no longer needed the dresser in the closet.  I borrowed the desk from my daughter’s room and I might just keep it.  I’ll be finding her a new desk, don’t worry.

The only thing is now I have an empty wall in our bedroom that I have no idea what I should do with.  It’s almost too small for furniture like chairs and I don’t really want to add another dresser.  I could move the desk/vanity out there but then the closet is really empty looking.  We did move the dresser at the end of our bed over to that wall but it was too small for the big wall.  The bed was moved to that wall as well but I didn’t like it.

Here is the wall with the dresser:

One of the reasons the dresser worked well at the end of our bed is that the footboard does not attach to our frame.  We need to buy a new frame for it to attach to.  So now here’s a photo without the footboard:

Next up, pillows, a bed skirt and curtains.  I’m thinking of dong white curtains with a stencil/pattern on them.  Or maybe just plain gray velvet ones?   I’m still not clear on my vision for this room but it is better than what it looked like a few months ago.

Perhaps I should lighten up the room by doing one wall with a stencil or stripes?  Or will that be too much?  I think I’ve thought so long and hard on this that I can’t think straight anymore.

I’d love to hear your thoughts, ideas, suggestions, etc.  Anyone else having a master bedroom identity crisis?

Two lamps for less than $15? Score!

I rearranged our family room the other night with some help from my hubs and his muscles. Does anyone else pronounce it muskles because I was thinking that in my head as I was typing this. Anyways, I love how the family room is coming together with the console behind the couch.

I knew it would look fabulous with two lamps but I don’t have two lamps. Well I should say, I don’t have two lamps that would look right on the console.

Monday I set out to find two lamps and I did find some, at Savers. Savers is like Goodwill and I really like it. They have a fabulous shoe selection but I didn’t find anything in my size this time. I did score these two lamps for $3.99 a piece.

To top off these great finds, when I went up to the register to check out, I received an extra 25% off my purchases so I ended up paying 10.24 or something like that for two lamps and a mirror.

I had a plan for my lamps and it included this:

Here they are now after getting a little makeover:

I was being extra cautious with paper towel just in case the paint wasn’t completely dry.  I sometimes get a little  really impatient.   I was loving my “new” lamps and all they needed were some lamp shades.  I hit up Target today and found  two shades for $3.24 a piece!  Another great score from Target!
Here is the new $3.24 lamp shade on the lamp:

So do  you remember these lamp shades from the entryway?  They were only $5 a piece one of my scores at Target.

I thought I’d give those a try on the new lamp as well:

My hubby thinks the one on the left is too big for the lamp but I’m really not so sure. I am thinking if I went with the smaller tannish shade I could always paint it, trim it out with dark ribbon or stencil it.

So what do you think, lamp #1 or lamp  #2?
Let me know what one you would pick!

EDITED:  Ok wow!  Thanks for all the votes and I knew I was right going with #2 as well but just thought I’d see if hubby really was right.  (It happens like twice a year.  Seriously, even he admits to being wrong pretty much all the time.)  I really do love him, especially seeing as he even seemed to care a little bit about the lamp shades.  Here they are, in all their beautiful glory, now residing in our Master Bedroom on the coral nightstands!

Thanks for all your wonderful comments on my console color and lamps!

Craigslist & Thrifting Finds Link Party

I have been finding such great treasures on Craigslist and around town in different places that I thought it might be fun to do a little linky party! So if you have found some great treasures this summer at Yard Sales, Resale Shops, Antique Stores, Craigslist, the side of the road, the garbage dump, wherever, link it up! It can be something you’ve re-purposed or transformed or maybe something you are hoping to redo, anything goes! So come show off your finds and see what other people have found as well. I even made a little blog button for the party! I am thinking maybe we can do this once a month and see how it goes.
Since moving to a bigger city a few weeks ago, I have become a CL junky.  I stalk that thing and I’ve found some great things!  So today, I am sharing two of my finds with you.  The first one is actually from my friend, she was going to “get rid” of these side tables, possibly putting them out on the curb.  I came to their rescue and thought maybe they would like it at my house.  Here is the before:

After a light sanding, some primer and a few coats of Dark Walnut by Rustoleum, this is what they look like:

Just pretend you can’t see the lamp sitting on the floor in the background, it’s late and I had to take the picture in the dining room because the living room needs lamps that actually work and don’t just look cute.  Soon and very soon, I will have some light in there!  But I’m hopping down a rabbit trail, let’s get back to business!

So here are the rules to link up:

1.  Copy and paste the party button and add it to your post. The party button is on the right side of the blog.
2.  Please visit at least one other person’s link at the party and leave a comment. It’s fun to see what other people have found and share in their excitement too!

Ok, I’m really excited to see what you link up, so ready, set, go!

My Thrifting Finds and Spray Paint

Hello everyone! I’ve been busy the past few days spray painting furniture and other things, my husband was really afraid he’s next but I think he won’t get a coat of paint until he has some more gray hair. Ha! I kid, I kid.
Anyways, living in a bigger city definitely has its advantages. The craigslist finds are awesome along with the Goodwill having a great selection of items as well. Then there are some great resale shops around here and even a feed store with two backrooms chuck full of antiques and treasures. I haven’t even ventured to a garage sale around here yet but maybe this weekend I’ll give that a try too!
Here are a few of my treasures I’ve found for the home in the past few weeks.

I picked this beauty up the same day I bought the dresser for the family room and this cute side table was only $5.

I can’t believe this globe was still there at Goodwill on Saturday and for only $2.50. It is so perfect for the living room, I love it!

While at a resale shop a few weeks ago this caught my eye and I picked it up for $16. I was going to repaint it but I’m actually bringing some blingy gold back into my decor so she’ll stay this way. At least for now.

I was really on a roll yesterday, the decorating mojo was flowing I tell ya so I was spray painting everything, rearranging, found a few things in the basement I totally forgot I had and well, I’m quite pleased with how things are coming together around here.
Remember this thrift store lamp I picked up for $10?

Well after a few coats of Night Tide, look at her now. All she needs is to be rewired and maybe some ribbon trim around the shade and she’ll be good to go!

Next up, I had a little brown table that had seen some better days, much better days in fact. I couldn’t even take her picture she was so abused and worn out. Nothing a few coats of Night Tide couldn’t fix. (Are you sensing a theme here?)

Then I had an old mirror frame that I found in the basement. Here is her before:

And after wearing her new coat of Eden.

Remember this oval mirror?

I thought maybe she’d look better in gold.

So that’s what I’ve been up to the last day or so!  I am also going to start working on our master bedroom because the dark brown walls are just too much for me.   Every night before bed I look at them and shudder.  I’m on the look out for a headboard of some sort, maybe iron, a pallet, a door or an upholstered piece of plywood?  We’ll see!  Have you found any awesome treasures lately?  Where is your favorite place to find them?

Sneak Peek of the TV console/cabinet

I finished spray painting the TV console/cabinet and LOVE it! You can go check out a few pictures on The Blooming Hydrangea fb page. I hope you have a great weekend!!!!
