Our Family Room

Just like my underwear I am constantly changing, (I may occasionally pee them a little while laughing or sneezing, I’ve had 4 kids what can I say?) so is the family room constantly changing.   I love my white slip covered furniture, I really do.  Even though most days it looks like this with dog prints and kid marks, no not skid marks, kid marks.

With my kitchen looking so lovely after painting the cabinets, it was time to get this puppy done!

The last time I updated on this room was last March after I painted the Gray Owl, a good start but I didn’t love it.

After living with it in a state of like but not loving, I stole the black bookcase from the entryway, put the octagonal table up for sale on CL and brought the black trunk and green chair down from our bedroom.  I then played around with the mantel until I really was happy with it, in case you don’t already know, I hate decorating the mantel.  The federal mirror was a thrift store find for $4.  A little rub n buff turned it gold, it was originally bronze.  The mirror was free from my neighbor.  The rest of the mantel finds are clearance from Target and Kohls.

After studying my living room board on Pinterest I know some things I like in my living room now and one of them is bold window treatments aka curtains.  I found the black and white ones in the family room at Target on clearance for $5 for 2 panels or $10 total for all 4.

I love gold/brass whatever you want to call it and, I don’t care if it goes out of style, I love it!   The same for black, I really like touches of it here and there.  Classic black.

If it isn’t kids, the dogs feel a need to be in the photo shoot as well.  Good thing they are cute!

Here’s a little before and after so you can see how far this room has come.  This was from the fall of 2011 so we had only been in our home for a few months and I was trying to use what we had until I could figure out what I wanted, the trim had yet to be painted and it was beige all over!

The room is furnished with CL finds, thrift store treasures, Target clearance and items I’ve transformed with spray paint and Rub N’ Buff.  I am cheap and don’t like to spend a lot of money.  Our current tv stand is a dresser from CL that I painted and once used as a buffet in our dining room.  My hubby removed the top drawer, fitted the area with plywood that I painted black, drilled some holes for cables and voila, a tv stand.   The coffee table was another CL find for $20, it’s been in our bedroom, the formal living room and it’s found a new home here in the family room.   The lamp on the side table was another thrift store purchase for $5 and the black reading lamp in the corner was a target clearance for $11, originally $40.   One of the only things besides my couch and chairs that I paid full price for, is the starburst mirror by Martha Stewart at Home Depot.  It makes me happy.   The horse picture in the corner above the chair was from my mother-in-law.  She had it in her bedroom as a child and knew I was a vintage kind of girl so she passed it on to me After a year of finding things and taking my time, I finally have a room that I am proud of!!!!

Future plans for this room include building bookshelves around the fireplace and stone over the tile surround, replacing the carpeting with wood floors and I would love to cover up the popcorn ceiling with planking and get
rid of the eyeball lighting.  Until I win the lottery or a makeover from HGTV, I think this room will be staying like this for a while.  I have many other rooms and projects waiting for me!

My Fall Mantel

The kids are back to school, the pool is being drained, leaves are starting to turn, the temperature is a cool 95 degrees, ok ignore that last part but everything else points to falls arrival.  My friend Erin at How to Nest for Less posted a pic of her beautiful fall mantel and I was feeling inspired to change mine up after seeing hers.   If you want to pin this image, please head over to this post and pin directly from her blog.

It was also probably the feeling of sweet freedom as all 4 children were in school and I had laundry and dishes nothing to do.  The bub’s started pre-school yesterday, this momma did not cry, ok well maybe I shed a tear of happiness as I have 7.5 hours to myself each week but who’s counting.  He needs to get out and play with some peeps his age and I need some time alone so I can do important things, like cleaning and organizing playing with fall flowers in the dollar store for 45 minutes.

Here was mantel from sometime this spring/summer.  I love my Martha Stewart Sunburst mirror but I have really had a hard time finding stuff that fit around it.  By the way, I have a love hate relationship with mantel decorating.  I see cute mantels like Erin’s and get all inspired and then I end up getting frustrated after two hours and just throw something up there.  Something like the picture below.

Today after hauling up many different accessories from my storage area, trying things, taking pictures, posting to fb for feedback and tpssing goldfish at the bub’s while he sat on the couch, I came up with this.  The right side I love, the left side is ok.  I’m open to suggestions so please feel free to help a sister out.  Part of my problem is that I am not a hoarder and I”m actually the opposite which I guess would be a minimalist.  I don’t have a lot of “stuff” to work with for the mantel.  I need to hit up some garage sales for books and maybe a few picture frames.

Just for fun, this is the mantel from last fall.  Granted we had only been living in this house for about four months and I was still trying to figure out what furniture for which room, where to place the tv, etc.

The family room has come a long way in the past year, the painted trim and walls certainly lightened up the space.  I think even in my photography there has been some improvement, thanks in part to a better camera but also trying to shoot in manual mode and learning some skills.

I’ve also realized while talking with my friend Jen that I don’t even own a pumpkin for fall!  Can you believe it?   Not a ceramic one, plastic one, wooden one, raffia one, crocheted one, fabric one, nothing.  Hobby Lobby might be a good place to start, I have a birthday soon, maybe I should ask for pumpkins for my gifts.  Maybe I will become a pumpkin hoarder.  Do you own a pumpkin?   Do you decorate your mantel for the seasons?

Family Room in Progress

If you aren’t sick of updates on this room, read on.  Improved photos and details are in this post.

Details on this room:

Curtains are Target clearance and were $5 for two panels, so $10 total for four curtain panels

Couch and chairs are IKEA EKTORP series

The blue chair is from Savers, $12

The coffee table was a CL find, FREE

The mirrored side table was a CL find, $5

The lamp was a Savers find, $5 and I already owned the lamp shade which was a Target clearance find for $5

The blanket on the back of the couch was made for me by my Grandma and given to me at my bridal shower

The tv console/dresser was another CL find that I painted black, $75

The starburst mirror over the mantle is from Home Depot’s Martha Stewart line $35

I would like some more pillows for the couch and to do something with the tv wall, perhaps a gallery wall and other than that, it’s done!

Family Room – Updated

I posted a few quick pics of our family room a few weeks ago but I’ve made a few changes since then. First off, I actually sort of did the mantle. The Martha Stewart Starburst mirror from Home Depot for $35 was one of my best purchases for this room, I love it! It makes me happy every time I look at the fireplace.  The frames were from the dollar section at Target and were 75% off, so for $1 I was able to frame these pictures that I photocopied out of a book I own.   The greenery is from IKEA and so are the pots they are sitting in.  Something with a bit more height would be better for this space but I really don’t want to head out and purchase more stuff I really don’t NEED, I’d rather work with what I have.  The mantle is definitely a struggle for me, I just don’t enjoy decorating this area, if you have any tips or suggestions, I’d love to hear them!

Here’s my $5 Craigslist side table with my $5 lamp from Savers and my owl was a garage sale find for $4.  Gosh I love a good deal!

The $12 blue chair from Savers has made its way back into this room.  I just love this pillow from TJ Maxx it is so versatile, I originally had it in our master bedroom but for now it’s down here. Hopefully in the next few weeks I’ll be adding some different pillows to the family room.

The Gray Owl paint by Benjamin Moore is really a great gray color but it does have a slight green tone to it.  Even so, the space feels so calm and relaxing, I love it!  Soon I’ll share some pictures of this same color in the entryway where we don’t get as much natural light so you can see how different this color looks in different areas of my home.

Starting on Tuesday I will be participating in the Color My World Challenge with a group of really great bloggers. The challenge is to introduce a new color into your home via paint and fabric. I’m still a bit undecided but I am leaning towards a certain color that I struggle with so it should be interesting to say the least! Look for more news on that next week.

Finally, next week will be busy with blogging, I have many posts planned that are going to be a lot of fun. Also we will be celebrating TBH one year bloggiversary with a few giveaways! My children are on spring break for the next TEN days so my posts will be up but I may be a bit scarce around these parts and on facebook.   Have a wonderful weekend!!!!

I’m Done Playing Musical Furniture (for now)

Good Morning Friends! I am feeling about 95% today which is a lot better than I felt last week. I did muster up enough strength to play Musical Furniture and score some free coffee tables but the rest of the time I was doing a whole lot of nothing.  Unless you count blowing my nose and smearing thick layers of vaseline on my lips and nose area.  Needless to say, my hubby thought I was looking pretty hot, he couldn’t wait to kiss me, I told him no.
Last Friday we were deciding on which furniture arrangement looked best in the family room after I had finished painting it Gray Owl by Benjamin Moore. The leather for sure has been moved out to the living room and the white couch and chairs are staying in the family room. I went with this layout here, seeing as #4 was quite the popular pick and I really liked it as well.

I decided to switch the furniture as Kristi & Vanessa suggested and we have a winner! I am borrowing the pillows from our master bedroom for right now to use on the couch and chair, they just look so good down here. I also added the afghan my grandma made me for my wedding on the back of the couch.

This is one of the free coffee tables I picked up on Friday from a furniture consignment store.  I love it!

The mantel has a hodge podge of stuff on it right now, including this awesome gold bamboo and linen frame I paid $5 at the consignment shop where I scored my free coffee tables. I am envisioning some flamingo art in there soon.

I picked up this picture at Savers the other week for $2.  I am hiding the light switch outlets behind here.  This chair and table are temporary until a find a chair that is a better fit for this corner.  It works for now.

Here is where the brassy lassy coffee table lives for now with the leathers in the living room with the kitchen we built for the kids.   I would like to move the entertainment center turned kitchen into the basement playroom but hubby thinks it might be too heavy.  Boo.

The brassy lassy is a great table for serving food at, especially when your kids make the menu.
The menu includes Zertis Fleisch. What is Zertis Fleisch you ask?  That’s a darn good question and if you know the answer, please let me know because it is German.

It looks like Ruby might have even tried Zartes Fleisch judging by the chew marks on the can.

I want the new Martha Stewart Sunburst Mirror from HD for over the fireplace which I will be purchasing later this week.  It’s my $35 splurge for this room as I usually like to CL or thrift things for the home.  I need to make or find some pillows for the couch too but all in good time.
Here is a little before and after:

I’m loving the lighter and brighter look, what do you think?   Did you do anything fun this weekend?  Rearrange any rooms?  I’d love to hear from you!

Musical Furniture Friday Fun, check it out y’all

After painting the family room, kitchen and entry way BM Gray Owl this week, I thought maybe it was time to allow Ektorp back in to the family room. She had been banished to the basement for a while but I was missing her whiteness in my life.  It also helps that I found an extra slipcover for the couch for $25 at IKEA a few months ago.  Let’s just say, blue sharpie marker and a dog in heat have done some damage to the slipcovers.  Who wants to sit on my couch?

Here are the 376 ways I rearranged this room yesterday in between blowing my nose and running to the store to buy more tissues.  Ruby found it helpful to sit on the loveseat which was conveniently located by the patio door.  She thought it was a good placement of furniture for her.

And here is a pic with the leather couple.  The room feels very closed in to me and a bit overwhelming.

There you have it folks, musical furniture Friday fun.  What do you think, have a favorite or maybe a new idea for me to try?  I’m all ears!   Although the black dresser and tv can NOT be moved as we put two holes in the wall to hide the cords and Mr. Blooming would not be very happy with me you if I suggested we move them.  Don’t forget you can also find me guest posting over at the fabulous Cassie’s blog today, Primitive & Proper.

Have you played musical furniture lately?  Please tell me I’m not the only one who rearranges every two weeks.  Please?  You can lie, I won’t tell, promise.

Random Stuff and a Peek at the Gray Owl Paint

I’m popping in quick to remind you that GFC is going away for me this week as I am in the process of getting a blog redesign and moving to WordPress. You can follow me through RSS feed, email or fb which is all located on the right hand side of the blog.
You would think with a blog redesign and moving to WP going on and just finishing the bub’s room last week that I wouldn’t be diving into anything else. Well I like to keep busy as I started painting the family room/kitchen and front entryway yesterday. The color I chose is Benjamin Moore Gray Owl which is a very light light gray. There were a few other colors I debated on but Gray Owl was showing up as a true gray compared to the other choices like Coventry Gray, Stonington Gray and MS Bedford Gray.
Here are a few shots from this morning, it’s cloudy out so not the best light for taking picture and my house is obviously not ready for a photo shoot so I threw some stuff up on the mantle and called it good.

Yesterday I was unsure of the color but I do like it today. Usually I go for bold colors so having a light color is quite a change for me. One of the only things the hubby and I don’t like is that the white trim doesn’t seem to pop like it did with the beige that was already on the walls. What do you think?

Next up is trying the Ektorp in here vs the leather.  I moved the blue chair out of the corner and tried an ektorp.  Stay tuned for more updates on the ever evolving family room!  I’ll be back tomorrow to share about a great gift I received in the mail this week.

Thrift Store Score!

Last week I posted some pics of the family room. The one thing that this room is missing is lighting. Ok, it has lighting but I am talking about lighting that doesn’t look like giant adjustable eyeballs in the ceiling.

The lamps are kind of sparse in our house right now, there are two in our master bedroom which used to reside in the family room.  If you remember, I found these lovelies at Savers, they ended up getting a spray paint job and new lampshades that were Target clearance finds.
The other pair of lamps in our home are from Target and were on clearance, of course!  They have been in the master bedroom and now currently reside on the blue console/buffet/dresser in the Living Room turned Dining Room.  The black lamps are on the smaller side but they work well right now for us as there is no other lighting in that room which we’ll discuss in another blog post.
How convenient that both sets of lamps are in this one picture.

The hunt for lamps has been ongoing for the past few months but I’ve not found anything that tripped my trigger.  That is until today!  Today at Savers I found this beauty all by herself.   I was really hoping she had a mate but maybe she’s recently divorced or perhaps she was always a single gal, I guess I will never know.

I think I have found the perfect spot for her, what do you think?

Only $4.99 and it’s not something you can find at Target or Pottery Barn plus I don’t have to paint it or do anything, she’s perfect the way she is.  Have you found any thrift store beauties lately?

Room & Furniture Swapping, do you do it?

Well I think the title of this blog sums it up fairly well. Why is it when I have things I need to do, I instead find other things to do? Like rearranging rooms, moving dressers from the basement to the main floor to the garage to the dining room and family room to the basement again? Does anyone else ever find themselves doing this?

The family room has a gas fireplace and is also where we keep the tv. On Wednesdays our home is opened up for a high school small group to meet in, we are not the leaders, they use our home for a meeting place and all we need to do is clean it. Well we probably don’t even have to do that but we do.
In our basement we have a room that could be a family room, play room, workout room, etc. This means our home has three areas that could be used for sitting/tv watching, playroom, etc.  Our formal living room is never in use, at all. Ok, well we use it for the occasional piano lesson and also the dogs think it is a great place to go when you have to throw up, less traffic in there I guess.

This was the day we moved in.

Then we purchased the leather set and I switched out the IKEA stuff into the family room.

Eventually the Ektorp sofa ended up in the basement and the leather couch went into the family room leaving a lonely loveseat in this big room with my $12 chair from Savers, our entertainment center turned kitchen and the free piano.

Now here is the family room since June.  I’ve rearranged this room too many times in six months.  Just ask the poor youth group kids, I’m sure they think I’m a nutso, everytime they come the furniture is either rearranged or is not the same furniture that was in the family room two weeks ago.

This was two weeks after we moved in, a little bare and why did I ever buy that matching couch and lovseat?  WHY?  (To make my hubby happy, that’s why.)

I had planned on recovering that ottoman….it didn’t happen. It was only $10, anyone want to recover it for me?

After realizing the ektorp sofa was getting too dirty for me and I was tired of washing it every two weeks, I made the decision for it to go in the basement room which has a tv in it and no where to sit.   It worked out nicely as our guests stay in the basement so now they have somewhere to sit (a dirty slipcovered sofa) and watch tv if they want.  I don’t think anyone has done this yet, maybe because the slipcovers look like they haven’t been washed since 1976  we are so fun upstairs no one wants to be in the basement away from the party.

The leather couch ended up in the family room with the white Ektorp chairs which for some reason stay much cleaner than the couch did. Maybe because the only ones that sit in the chairs are the dogs?

My evil plan to switch the living room and dining room casually happened the other day and the hubby was pretty cool with it.  I moved the chairs and blue dresser/console/buffet whatever we want to call it into the formal living room along with the dining room table and chairs.
I moved the leather loveseat into the family room and reunited the leather couple.  The white dresser/buffet from the dining room went into one of our daughter’s bedrooms.  I then brought the black buffet that used to be in our old dining room and was residing in the basement back up into the family room.  Then the old white buffet that was in our old dining room before the black one but that I painted coral one day on a whim  ended up in the garage but has since been moved to the basement room where the ektorp lives.  Do you have that all straight?  HA!

This is the family room today.  It was fun decorating the mantle,  I missed doing that when the tv was over the fireplace, it made it really hard to put anything on the mantle.

The hubby removed a drawer from the dresser and had a spare piece of half inch plywood leftover in the garage from another project, so he cut that to fit in the bottom of the drawer space.

I painted the plywood black and now we have a nice new home for the Wii and Blu-ray player.  My hubby then drilled a hole in the back of the dresser for the cords to fit through and we put some duct tape over the hole so you can’t see the light coming through the hole in the back of the dresser.

Here is how the tv wall looked for a few days.

I had a few problems with it though and it wasn’t sitting pretty with me.

Last night, I convinced hubby to do this.

Now the wall looks like this and I couldn’t be happier!

We are ordering a longer HDMI cable so we can move everything a  little more to the left to cover up the cable outlet on the wall. With two good size holes in our wall, I think the tv and dresser will be staying on this wall for quite a while. Or until I have PMS again and want to rearrange everything.

I can’t decide which chair I prefer in the corner, I am leaning towards the white ektorp but then I won’t have the matching chairs flanking the buffet in the dining room.  What’s a girl to do?

Here is the reason why the blue blanket is missing on the back of the sofa in the picture above.

I added the chest as a coffee table but not sure it’s staying.

The bookshelf will be getting a paint job and I am going to cover the back with some fabric, paper or a different color paint.  Eventually I’d like a mirror for over the mantle and I”m debating a gallery wall around the tv.  For now, I’m pretty happy with how this room is coming along.   Next week I’m hoping to show you the formal living room turned into the dining room but don’t hold me to that.
I can promise you a posting next week from this guy though and you will definitely want to read it and maybe even let your hubby/man read it to!

Two lamps for less than $15? Score!

I rearranged our family room the other night with some help from my hubs and his muscles. Does anyone else pronounce it muskles because I was thinking that in my head as I was typing this. Anyways, I love how the family room is coming together with the console behind the couch.

I knew it would look fabulous with two lamps but I don’t have two lamps. Well I should say, I don’t have two lamps that would look right on the console.

Monday I set out to find two lamps and I did find some, at Savers. Savers is like Goodwill and I really like it. They have a fabulous shoe selection but I didn’t find anything in my size this time. I did score these two lamps for $3.99 a piece.

To top off these great finds, when I went up to the register to check out, I received an extra 25% off my purchases so I ended up paying 10.24 or something like that for two lamps and a mirror.

I had a plan for my lamps and it included this:

Here they are now after getting a little makeover:

I was being extra cautious with paper towel just in case the paint wasn’t completely dry.  I sometimes get a little  really impatient.   I was loving my “new” lamps and all they needed were some lamp shades.  I hit up Target today and found  two shades for $3.24 a piece!  Another great score from Target!
Here is the new $3.24 lamp shade on the lamp:

So do  you remember these lamp shades from the entryway?  They were only $5 a piece one of my scores at Target.

I thought I’d give those a try on the new lamp as well:

My hubby thinks they are too big for the lamp but I’m really not so sure. I am thinking if I went with shade #1, I could always paint it, trim it out with dark ribbon or stencil it.

So what do you think?  Lamp shade #1 or #2?
