Master Bedroom – Progress

I’m back!  I will post more on my little blogging hiatus later.  Today my bedroom was featured over on Benjamin Moore’s Facebook Page.  The comments were not very kind but that’s ok, I like my bedroom and so does my husband.  Plus it did receive way more likes than negative comments and was shared 60 times.   The best part today though was all the love and support from friends, family and bloggers!  They made my day!

I realize the only pics of our bedroom are of the stenciled wall so for those who think the entire room is stenciled, it’s not.   Back in September I changed up a few things and grabbed a few shots with the camera.  This long wall was a problem, I really didn’t know what to do with it.  I scooped up this dresser free from Craigslist and painted the drawers for some contrast but I didn’t love it on this big wall.

I changed out the desk from our closet with the dresser, added a sunburst mirror and the green chair, voila, instantly better!

Here’s a little before shot from when we were surviving in this room.

Still on the hunt for a bedskirt, well ok, the truth is I don’t want to spend $50 on a bedskirt.  I’m cheap!  Another before for you cause I”m nice like that.

Thank goodness for white trim and new doors!

This is my keeping it real photo for you, do you like the vent hanging down from the bathroom ceiling?  Hubby fixed that, I am too lazy to take another picture.  Next up is to work on the closet, it needs some help!

And the final before and after:

There you go!  Progress!  Hoping to get started on the master bathroom soon as well but we also have hubby’s office in the works and he wants to build a bookcase wall.  I’m also trying to finish up two girls bedrooms and painting in the basement.   The bedroom color is Hale Navy by Benjamin Moore and the nightstands are painted Rhubarb by Benjamin Moore.

Thanks for all your support and comments while I was gone, not knowing if I”d be back or not!   I’ve definitely figured out a few things and I’ll be back again soon!

Reader Inspired Stenciled Wall and a Cutting Edge Stencils Giveaway

Is anyone else feeling really behind on life right now thanks to the gorgeous weather?   Trips to the park, zoo, picnics, hiking, bike riding, making giant ice cream cones with chalk on the sidewalk with neighborhood kids, having friends over to grill out, first campfire of the year, buying sandals for 4 children and digging out summer clothes, that is what I did the past few days and I LOVED all of it!

Ok, this post is getting away from me, all I meant to say is, the weather is great and I hope you are enjoying it too and that is why I have not blogged lately, well and the fact that my keyboard has been freaking out on me.  So far so good today, let’s hope it stays this way!

One of my blog readers, Judy, recently sent me some pictures of her hallway that she stenciled after being inspired by my master bedroom wall.  I LOVE the stencil she chose, the Connection Allover Stencil,  it was actually in my cart at one point when I was having a hard time deciding from all the great choices at Cutting Edge Stencils.  Judy did a fabulous job and I love the color choices, they work well with the rest of her home which is beautiful as well.

I recently stenciled a wall in our Master Bedroom with Shipibo Allover Stencil.   If you have never stenciled a wall before, it’s fairly easy and only takes a few hours.  We managed to knock out the wall in our bedroom in about 3 hours.  My handsome hubby helped me by placing the stencil on the wall and my job was to just roll the paint on with the dense foam roller that came with the stencil.   The stencil comes with a level which is very helpful when lining it up on the wall.   They offer some great instructional videos for you to watch before you start stenciling, which you can find here.

In case you haven’t been here in a while, here is the after:

I love the dramatic wall in my bedroom, it took my bedroom from boring to amazing!  I love that you can customize the stencil to look the way you want it, do an entire wall, an entire room, a border, whatever you like.  Then choose the colors you want and you have a custom wallpaper look in your home for a great price and the best part, you did it yourself!  You don’t need to be an expert to stencil, trust me!

Are you ready for a chance to get your own Cutting Edge Stencil?  There are so many great styles to choose from I bet you will have a hard time deciding, just like I did.   Check out the Athena Allover!  Gorgeous right?

Or perhaps you want something less geometric?  How about the beautiful Nadya Stencil?   This isn’t your grandma’s damask!

So are you ready to get your stencil on?  Well one of you will be soon, thanks to Cutting Edge Stencils and little ol’ me!

One lucky reader will receive up to a $50 store credit to Cutting Edge Stencils with free shipping.  (US Residents Only)

Help Me Pick a Side Table, Any Side Table

The Master Bedroom is coming along, slow and steady. Last week I stopped into a furniture consignment shop and found this green leather chair for $42. I liked the look of her and as seems to be my way, she was a single gal, no partner for her. The end of our bed is in need of something and I thought this might fit the bill nicely.  A bench was originally on my radar for the end of our bed but I have not found anything at all.

Still needing something at the end of the bed, so I thought a side table might be nice.  Here are the three options I found in my home.  I would prefer not to buy anything and am wondering what you think of the following choices.

Option 1 – Blue Chewed on Distressed Beauty

Option 2 Gray Leggy Girl – which I wouldn’t mind painting

Option 3 – Round Robin

So cast your vote now, Options 1, 2 or 3.  I am open to painting 1 or 2 a different color but I think I need to leave 3 as an original.
And just in case you thought my room looks picture worthy at all times, here is what it looks like behind me, doors waiting to be painted and installed in the bub’s room this week along with the closet door from the hallway.  I think my hubby is tired of me getting paint on the carpeting so the saw horses are my hint to not paint the doors on the floor.

The old IKEA table from our previous playroom which was used to hold up the end of the bed because we don’t have a proper frame for it to be attached to.  Resolve used to clean up dog pee from the schnauzer who was mad we left her home this weekend with a doggy sitter.  She finds peeing on our bedroom carpet to be a good way to extract her revenge.  Little does she know she’s just helping along my cause to get laminate flooring in here, soon.   That’s why we have a ginormous garbage can in our room, it’s for the 7,000 tissues I use while sleeping in the night, thank you dust mites!

Still waiting to put the vent back on the wall.  Oops.  We also like to hide red balloons under our dresser and play balloon tag after the kids go to bed.  Maybe naked.  Was that too much?  Ok, we really don’t do that but maybe we might start now.
Apparently leaving pony holders in doorways are an excellent way to remind your mom to put your hair up before school starts.

Did you catch a peek at the free dresser?  I painted the drawers when it was really warm out one day but apparently 42 degrees isn’t quite warm enough for spray painting.  They look ok but need a few more coats of white.  Guess that will have to wait another month or two.
I’m eagerly awaiting your votes on the tables so tell me your thoughts!!!

Master Bedroom Update (again) Painted Nightstands

One day this room will be complete and the title will read Master Bedroom Complete! You won’t even know what to do with yourself because this room has been progressing since November. Really I’m so close to being done, I just need some artwork and to figure out a bedskirt.  The last update from a few weeks ago I suggested it was time to paint the nightstands and you all gave me such wonderful color ideas. I tried green but it wasn’t looking so great. Next choice was coral and we found a winner!

Just a refresher, here is the room a few short months ago, a mish mash of stuff with some temporary red curtains, boring beige walls that looked like purple poop at night and the nightstands I found for $35 total.

The color of the nightstands is Benjamin Moore Rhubarb.  I used a semi-gloss paint to get more of a glossy sheen on them.

I used some rub n buff to goldify the handles of our nightstands.  They were somewhat gold but it was a bit tarnished, this brought the gold factor up a level and it has a little more pop now.

Here is the nightstand before and after:

Thanks for all your help with the nightstands!  I think they look so much better and add a nice punch of color to the room.  What do you think?

Master Bedroom Update and other Thurdsay Randomness

Well it seems I might have a new contributor to my blog.  Everyone thought my hubby was just the funniest guy in his first post, if only you people lived with him and his “humor” everyday, you  might not find him so funny.  Ok, really he can be funny and we do love to laugh in our home so I’m glad you were able to get a glimpse of the awesome man I am blessed to be married to.  Of course he also can make me angry, like the other day when discussing our dog’s behavior problems on the phone, he was upset, made a rude comment and I being the mature woman in this relationship, hung up on him.  We resolved the issue, apologized to each other and life is good again.  Many people think we are living a perfect happy life here and yes we are happy most days but our life is not perfect and neither are we, although he comes darn close.  He’s a keeper for sure!

Saturday night we hosted a game night at our home with some great families.  After moving the dining room into the living room, we lost an overhead light. Losing a light might be a benefit if you aren’t the best cook, then people can’t really see what they are eating but it presents a problem when you often use your dining room table for playing games.

So my hubby put his electrical skills to work and made this awesome light for us out of an extra extension cord and the boob light.

I did ask the hubby if I was being disrespectful calling him a boob and he was totally down with it, just so you know.

The giant boob light sold the very next day so now we have a single light bulb hanging form the ceiling.  We are trying to bring the depression era style back, what do you think?

Obviously this is not a long term solution to our lighting dilemma so I called an electrician to come and give us a quote.  He said it will be around $300 for them to come and cut holes in the drywall, drill through joists, run electrical to the middle of the room and install a box.  Then of course the drywall will need to be repaired and we have an awesome ugly popcorn treatment on our ceilings.  How do you recreate that great look yourself?  When I suggested just scraping the whole ceiling the hubsters was not having any of it.  I am giving up on the living room turned dining room for now and just moving it all back. Anyone else have any ideas for an overhead light without doing drywalling and electrical?

To end this blog on a happy note, I want to show you a little peek at my master bedroom wall.  I last left you with this picture:

A few days after hubby’s lasik surgery, we decided to get our stencil on in the bedroom.  Kinky, right?  My parrental units were here so we took advantage of them and got our groove on while they watched the kiddos.  Three hours later, we have this to show for it:

What do you think?  I love it, I was really hesitant to stencil this wall which is so not like me.  In fact, I had originally ordered this stencil from Cutting Edge back in November but then I emailed back and said, No Wait!  Don’t send it to me!  I then emailed again in December and said, ok send it!  I received the stencil on Christmas Eve and I still wasn’t sure about it.  I’m so glad I took a chance and did it!   Now if I can just convince the hubby we should paint the nightstands white.  You think after his post about painting wood yesterday he’d be on board with it.  Maybe y’all can convince him for me!  ;)

Art for My Bedroom & Paint by Numbers

While working on my 2012 House Goals post yesterday, I was inspired and then pinspired to find art for the Master Bedroom.  I was thinking that maybe an oil painting of a ship on the stormy sea would look good over the dresser. After searching the good ol’ internet for a bit, I found a picture that reminded me of a painting my grandparents used to have in their guest bedroom.

Follow this rabbit trail with me for a second, it will all make sense. For some reason it made me think of Bob Ross. I love Bob Ross, I remember when I was four years old watching him in the hospital after I had my tonsils out.  The big hair, his smiling face, the calming voice, the great verbage such as “Happy Little Trees” I mean really, what’s not to love about Bob Ross?

After thinking about Bob, I was reminded of paint by numbers.

I loved doing paint by numbers as a kid, some of them can look really cool and I need some cheap art, so it sounds like a great solution to my art dilemma.

Here are a few great paint by numbers I found and pinned for inspiration.  I must be on a large bird kick as well as ships on the sea.

I was always creeped out by the clown ones, they just look way too happy to be wearing makeup and ruffles!

Maybe I will become Paint by Number obsessed and apparently I will even be able to do them while going to the bathroom, that is multitasking at it’s finest right there!

I love how they look with a big chunky frame around them, gives them a vintage feel.

Who wouldn’t love a Gallery Wall of Paint by Numbers, especially if you didn’t have to paint them all?

This one is my favorite Pin of the day, I love it!

Have you ever done a paint by number?  Do these leaving you feeling inspired to create your own art work even if it’s not a paint by number?

If you don’t hear from me for a while, it’s because I’m busy creating a gallery wall of paint by number art!  It could also be since I am the proud new owner of a Canon t3i,  I have no idea how to use it and I’m knee deep in the user manual.   I’ll be back to post my House Goals for 2012 this week and highlight some of the great links from the 2011 Year in Review Party!  Today is the last day to link up so get your post ready and come join the party.

Master Bedroom Update, thank you Craigslist!

After painting the trim and the stripes in the closet I lost the vision for the master bedroom.  It’s been just kind of blah but this past weekend Craigslist came through and now the vision is back!

Can you believe I scored this dresser, for free?  That’s right peeps, someone didn’t want this anymore and I found it at 2am so I emailed them.  They sent out a blanket email at 7 am to all 35 people that emailed them regarding the dresser.  I woke up at 8:30, read the email, called them and said, I’ll be right there!  I couldn’t believe it was still available.  My hubby, who loves his sleep, was so awesome to get up and go with me to get the dresser.  I knew that he’d rather sleep than load up a dresser but he loves me more than sleep.
I have been looking for a throw to add to the end of the bed and managed to scoop up a chunky chenille throw on Saturday at Target for $20.  Even if it doesn’t stay there long term, I love the blanket and I can always use it elsewhere in our home.   I decided the lamps from the family room look really good in our bedroom so I stole them from the console but now that I look at the picture, maybe some thicker, girthier lamps would be better.  And yes, girthier is a word  I just made up.  Now I will have to head back to Savers or Goodwill and find new lamps to spray paint for the family room or my bedroom.

It’s impossible to take pictures with kids or dogs in them.  Really.  I also added my federal mirror above the bed, that’s the start of the gallery wall.  Maybe.  After putting the dresser at the end of the bed we no longer needed the dresser in the closet.  I borrowed the desk from my daughter’s room and I might just keep it.  I’ll be finding her a new desk, don’t worry.

The only thing is now I have an empty wall in our bedroom that I have no idea what I should do with.  It’s almost too small for furniture like chairs and I don’t really want to add another dresser.  I could move the desk/vanity out there but then the closet is really empty looking.  We did move the dresser at the end of our bed over to that wall but it was too small for the big wall.  The bed was moved to that wall as well but I didn’t like it.

Here is the wall with the dresser:

One of the reasons the dresser worked well at the end of our bed is that the footboard does not attach to our frame.  We need to buy a new frame for it to attach to.  So now here’s a photo without the footboard:

Next up, pillows, a bed skirt and curtains.  I’m thinking of dong white curtains with a stencil/pattern on them.  Or maybe just plain gray velvet ones?   I’m still not clear on my vision for this room but it is better than what it looked like a few months ago.

Perhaps I should lighten up the room by doing one wall with a stencil or stripes?  Or will that be too much?  I think I’ve thought so long and hard on this that I can’t think straight anymore.

I’d love to hear your thoughts, ideas, suggestions, etc.  Anyone else having a master bedroom identity crisis?

Master Bedroom Progress

Good Afternoon friends!  I am really excited to show you what we did in the closet this past weekend. (Get your minds out of the gutter, people).  This is our closet before my great idea. Vanilla, boring, gross wire shelving and some bad photography.  Some of these pics are from my camera phone.  I am at the end of my rope with my Kodak, it literally eats batteries and I can not hardly use my camera anymore.  Earlier today I had visions of smashing it in the middle of the road with a hammer and then running it over again and again.  (I think I have PMS).

This is the closet after my great idea.  It took some awesome Scotch Blue Edgelock tape and my wonderful hubby who did the hard part, figuring out the math for the stripes and then measuring and drawing the lines on the wall.  I had the easy part, putting the tape on the walls, painting and taking the tape off.

I LOVE IT!

Ok, well here is how it really looks right now once we added back in some of the wire shelving, our clothes and a dresser.  I convinced him we didn’t need all that shelving in there because it makes it hard to see the stripes. I am not sure if the dresser is staying in there or not yet, we are experimenting with that.  I asked the hubs to not put the door to the closet back on either because I want to admire my stripes at night while in bed.

I found this online at ana-white.com the other day and I’m hoping the hubby will want to build it in our closet sometime soonish and after we find an extra $200 in the budget.

I’ll post a few before and afters of how the bedroom looks now with white trim.  We are hoping to be able to start purchasing the white six panel hollow core doors in a few weeks.  That will also make a huge difference in the look!

I am having a lamp dilemma and I’m sure I’ll figure it out but here is a side by side of the current black lamps and the lamps from the family room.  I think we need some taller lamps in here but the hubby loves the black lamps.  One of the options is, I put the black lamps on top of some books for height.  The bubs was not cooperating so I just let him be on the bed while I shot some pics.

I also had this big furry beast on my bed too, they always want to be where the action is.  Ahem.

Next on the list for the bedroom is replacing the doors, figuring out what I want on the walls and what I’m doing with lamps.  I also would like a blanket of some sort for the end of the bed, curtains that are not red and left over from the previous owners, some pillows and a bed skirt. Also need to figure out what to do with dresser and if we should add some other furniture to the blank wall where the dresser used to be.  I’m thinking the rest of the room is going to move slowly for a few months and I’m ok with that.
The hubby would like some dark brown hardwood floors too and so would I but I think that is for another year.
And now onto the failure of the weekend, the bathroom vanity of doom. This is what it looked like before I painted it, just a standard builder oak vanity.

Here is after with a bad color choice on my part, thank you Rustoleum Kona Brown.  Who knew that it would look like purple/chocolate pudding?  Not me.

I had some fun on Picnik with stickers, I love that there is a toilet paper roll sticker so I thought this was a perfect time to use it along with the skull and crossbones.

I think maybe the paint fumes have started to do something to my brain.

Master Bedroom Ideas

Hello out there!  I’m back in the swing of blogging again after taking a little break last week and part of this week.  Between recovering from a cold and from many weekends of hosting company, I think I’m ready to think about tackling another project.  I wasn’t sure what project I would start next but I’m leaning heavily towards our Master Bedroom. I’m tired of having a room with nothing on the walls except a paint color I hate, an unattached headboard and some ugly red curtains that were here when we moved in.
I want our bedroom to be something I love walking into and going to sleep in at night. I was thinking gray and yellow a few months ago.  The more I thought about it the more I just knew it wasn’t inspiring me. I have always loved the color blue in various shades and inspiration hit a few weeks ago. When I asked the hubby if he would like a navy blue master bedroom he was on board. In fact, he’s really kind of excited about it. Our last bedroom was more shabby chic and that wasn’t his favorite style. I did go out and get some sample paints of navy blue colors, Benjamin Moores Hale Navy and Newburyport Blue. This is what they look like on the wall, the darker color is the Hale Navy on the top right.  Don’t ask why I have 6 different swatches of paint on the wall…..it’s confusing.

I’m not loving either one so it’s back to the drawing board. Anyone have a great navy blue color they would like to recommend?  Along with the navy blue I’m thinking of course I need some gold and maybe some coral accents.   It sounds an awful lot like my cloffice, blue, gold and coral accents. Ok, well I think I really like those colors together, so shoot me.  And who knows, maybe I’ll change my mind again before I finish this room…..cause I do that all the time sometimes

Of course I went to my favorite source for inspiration, Pinterest!  Here is what I found and pinned:

I also love this art as the jumping off point for the bedroom but it’s $900 so I am pretty sure you won’t see this on my walls anytime soon!

Then I found this pillow but once again, it’s too pricey for me. $100 for one pillow? Yikes! My hubby thinks maybe it’s made of real gold for that price.

This one was in my price range (only $8) but not exactly what I was looking for, maybe I should’ve played more Dungeons & Dragons as a kid because then I might actually like this pillow:

Finally, I think I found something that will work on etsy but I’m going to wait a day or two before I decide to because I want to be sure they’ll fit the vision..

Here’s what our bedroom looks like currently. The walls are Tiki Hut and Threshold Taupe by Sherwin Williams. This is what it looks like on the computer, kind of a nice brown/gray color.

In real llife it looks like a purple brown on my walls, it would be the color on the left side of the room.  Just pretend that lamp shade isn’t crooked and don’t wonder why it’s crooked either.  We are crazy wild people, ok?

I did find two nightstands this past weekend for $35 total. I’m thinking of painting them white but I’m not sure yet. We’ll see how dark the room feels first. Sorry for the poor quality picture but my camera battery is dead, again. This camera eats batteries and I think I might have spent $500 in batteries so far. At this point I could’ve purchased a better camera. Augh. Anyways, the nightstands are in nice shape and I’ve been looking for some since we moved here.  And notice the nice straight lamp now?

On a side note, I am kicking myself for passing up this chair for $13! I’m hoping it’s still there…not sure where I would put it but I really liked it and it was only $13!

This is our current head and foot board for our bed. In our last house we used an old door for our headboard but before we left I gave it to my friend Shannon so she could make a headboard for her daughter. I miss my old door but she’s in a good home so I’ll be ok.
I am not sure if we’ll keep this brassy lassy or give her to our oldest daughter for her bedroom which doubles as the guest room. I would like to make a tufted headboard but I’m trying to keep the Master makeover budget under $200 and I must say, I feel like everyone has a tufted headboard, is it the cool thing to do?  Too trendy?  Overdone?  Classic?  Always in Style?  I could also spray paint the brassy lassy….although that might have to wait until Spring which could be like 9 months from now.  Augh.

And I can’t even think about window treatments yet. First I need to paint all the trim white, repaint the dresser white and maybe the nightstands too. IF we make a headboard we’ll want to do that and then I’ll paint the walls. So I’m thinking this room might be finished before Christmas.  Maybe tomorrow’s post will be about me painting the kitchen cabinets instead.  No one is coming here for Thanksgiving so the pressure is off to have a nice kitchen for hosting.  Hmmmm……I guess you’ll have to check back and see which project is next. What are you all working on?  Anyone painting kitchen cabinets right now?  Anyone make a tufted headboard lately?  Talk to me peeps, I want to see what you’re up to!

Two lamps for less than $15? Score!

I rearranged our family room the other night with some help from my hubs and his muscles. Does anyone else pronounce it muskles because I was thinking that in my head as I was typing this. Anyways, I love how the family room is coming together with the console behind the couch.

I knew it would look fabulous with two lamps but I don’t have two lamps. Well I should say, I don’t have two lamps that would look right on the console.

Monday I set out to find two lamps and I did find some, at Savers. Savers is like Goodwill and I really like it. They have a fabulous shoe selection but I didn’t find anything in my size this time. I did score these two lamps for $3.99 a piece.

To top off these great finds, when I went up to the register to check out, I received an extra 25% off my purchases so I ended up paying 10.24 or something like that for two lamps and a mirror.

I had a plan for my lamps and it included this:

Here they are now after getting a little makeover:

I was being extra cautious with paper towel just in case the paint wasn’t completely dry.  I sometimes get a little  really impatient.   I was loving my “new” lamps and all they needed were some lamp shades.  I hit up Target today and found  two shades for $3.24 a piece!  Another great score from Target!
Here is the new $3.24 lamp shade on the lamp:

So do  you remember these lamp shades from the entryway?  They were only $5 a piece one of my scores at Target.

I thought I’d give those a try on the new lamp as well:

My hubby thinks the one on the left is too big for the lamp but I’m really not so sure. I am thinking if I went with the smaller tannish shade I could always paint it, trim it out with dark ribbon or stencil it.

So what do you think, lamp #1 or lamp  #2?
Let me know what one you would pick!

EDITED:  Ok wow!  Thanks for all the votes and I knew I was right going with #2 as well but just thought I’d see if hubby really was right.  (It happens like twice a year.  Seriously, even he admits to being wrong pretty much all the time.)  I really do love him, especially seeing as he even seemed to care a little bit about the lamp shades.  Here they are, in all their beautiful glory, now residing in our Master Bedroom on the coral nightstands!

Thanks for all your wonderful comments on my console color and lamps!
