Our Sexy Master Bedroom – The Details

November 11, 2014

A few short (6) weeks ago, I decided to participate in the One Room Challenge Link Up hosted by Linda from Calling it Home.  Our bedroom has been a little sad ever since I painted over the stenciled and navy walls which were really fun and I loved them but I struggled to make it work for us with decor and bedding.  So I painted it all a pale gray and really didn’t do much after that.

My goal for this room was a space that we both would love as this is our only room that is completely ours! I made a Sexy master bedroom pinterest board that we could both pin to and asked the hubby to please find some pins that he liked for bedrooms.  After figuring out the key elements we wanted in our room we got to work.  Six weeks later, we are so in love with our room, every night after the kids are in bed, lunches made and dishes done, we head up here to hang out!

The headboard we made ourselves because as my husband says, he is “stupid cheap.”  And really, I didn’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on a headboard either when there are a gazillion tutorials out there on how to make your own and really, we are pretty capable DIY’ers.  There are some things we would do differently, especially on the top part but overall I’m pretty happy with it.

I love that it’s super soft to lay back against when I’m reading or blogging.   We used this tutorial from DO or DIY and I was happy we did it this way because we redid the tufting like 3 times before we settled on what we liked.  Between the fabric, the foam mattress pads, screws, washers, boards, nailhead trim and buttons we spent about $150.

The dark wall color is Urbane Bronze by Sherwin Williams, it’s a moody charcoal brown color and of course I picked up a gallon at 30% off so it was $26 for the paint.  I left the other walls Light French Gray but may eventually repaint those something more neutral.

We kept the nightstands for now but I would love some bigger 3 drawer style chests on each side.  The artwork above each nightstand is from Hobby Lobby and I’m so glad they worked out in here as I’ve loved those for a while now.  I thought they were a steal for $20 each on sale!

I stole the reading lamp from the cloffice and found a similar one for the hubby’s side at Lowes for $35.

The fabric for my animal print pillows was from Hobby Lobby and once again, 2 yards for $11, what a deal!  The gray pillow is from Pier 1 and was $20, I love the subtle pattern and shimmer.

I recovered our yellow bench from Target with fabric I already had in the basement and added the leftover nail head trim from the headboard project.  Finally, a free project in this room!  The blanket is from Pier 1 and was on sale for $35, it’s the softest blanket I’ve ever laid my hands on and the pattern is fabulous too.

I really debated purchasing a big leaning mirror but when I found this one and it was only $59 I decided to try it in here.  I also picked up two flotaki rugs at $16 each, boththe rugs and mirror are from Homegoods.  A quick trip to IKEA one day lead me to buy the plant and basket for $22 total and yes, the plant is real!  Yikes, let’s hope we don’t kill it!

All the candles and candle holders were from Hobby Lobby for 50% off of course and the glass vases that you really can’t see the candles in were from the dollar store along with the gold charger!  The white horse head was Target clearance purchase last year and still one of my favorites.

The gold sunburst mirror was from Home Depot, the Martha Stewart line but I believe they just clearanced those out and they are no longer in the store.  Hello and Love came from Hobby Lobby at 50% off of course!  Monique as we now call her is the painting we found at Homegoods for $30.  The hubby really thought she looked better against the dark wall and she really did but I just could not get it all to work out with the art so she is now above the chair.  Speaking of, the chair is from Target and was on sale for $115 and is perfect for a little reading corner.  The white curtains and gold pillow are both from Homegoods, the pillow was $16 and curtains were $29 for the pair.  The blinds were a Lowes clearance find for $12/each so $36 for blinds is really a great deal!  We found a light on Craigslist for our dining room and I stole the chandelier from there for our bedroom.  I originally purchased this chandelier off Craigslist for $40 a few years ago and I love it, it’s super heavy and the crystals make pretty sparkles when light hits them!

I found a cute gold side table at Hancock Fabrics but it was $99!  Then I saw the reddish table for $20 and figured with some spray paint I could make mine gold and for a lot less than $99!  Here is one of the only pics of the table when it was red, sorry it’s from my phone and a little grainy.

Of course I already had gold spray paint at home so a few coats of paint and it looks better than the $99 table and mine was only $20!

So I think that’s everything we did to sexify the bedroom!  If you have any questions, I’d be happy to answer them for you!  I am going to be doing a future post on what key elements you could add to amp up the sexyness of the master bedroom!

Here are a few before and afters so you can see how lovely the new space really is!

BeforeafterbedEach night when we head up to our bedroom, it’s totally worth it to have a space just for us that we love and can spend time in!  I’m so glad I put the time, energy and money into our bedroom!
