Hey friends! It’s been an exciting week around here, most importantly, the master bathroom made it’s magazine debut, thanks to This Old House for the feature!

Week 2 already and I’ve accomplished, um nothing. Well that’s not completely true, I did buy three boston ferns from Home Depot last week when they were on sale for $5 each and an outdoor spaces magazine about decks that was pretty useless.

The weather in Minnesota has not been very warm or spring like but there is hope, the forecast showed some 60’s and 70’s over the next few days so I am hoping we can get started on the deck.

Here is some eye candy for you, we are thinking of doing something like this, a dark deck, cleaning off our black balusters and painting white above and below, then staining the top rail the same as the deck. Notice all my technical terms for the deck, I have no clue what half this stuff is called.
Our posts aren’t as cool as the ones in the photos above but that’s ok. We figure our deck has maybe a good 4 or 5 years left so we aren’t going to put a lot of time or money into changing it. The top of the railing is going to be replaced though as ours are kind of rough and splintery, you don’t really want to run your hand down the railing.

Sherwin Williams has some great stain color options that we really love compared to other stores. I am wanting a solid stain on there but everyone is telling me not to do it so we’ll see. I am leaning towards a more greige look this time, the last color worked well when we had a different roof but now with the gray roof I think it needs a change. We are hoping to narrow our choices down in the next few days so I would love to hear from you if you’ve stained your deck recently and found an amazing stain!
I made a quick idea board but I still need to add some more stuff to it. Here’s the start at least. Lol

I need a rug, some string lights and other decor but I’ll add that later. I have been gathering up a few little things but haven’t found much yet.

I have a deck to strip! Next week I’ll be back with a checklist and more olioboard fun! Make sure you check out all the other link ups and participants at Calling it Home!

I do not envy you stripping and staining the deck – been there, done that. But, the results are so worth it!! You got this!
Lol, yes it is not a fun job, kind of like scraping popcorn ceiling but you are right, it will be worth it! Hope you were able to get some work done in your closet too!
Don’t use a solid stain, use one of the new deck restore/renew products with texture. We figured our deck’s days were numbered as well, and thought that we had nothing to lose by trying. We have LOVED it and gotten many compliments-it looks like a brand new deck.
Linda,
I had read so many negative reviews on the deck restore products that we were a bit scared to try with the weather being so extreme in Minnesota. I’m glad yours is working out!
We are in Minnesota as well! Looks like the next several days should bring great weather. Hoping the weather cooperates for your deck project.
Thanks Tammy! The weather was awesome this weekend and we were able to get the whole deck stained! Although it needs a second coat on the main boards, it was so nice to be outside in the sun and warmth!
