Spring is in the air! And that means it’s time for the One Room Challenge. This will be my 6th time participating! This time around we are doing…..our family room/kitchen.
There is nothing really wrong with either space but we would like to add some more character/updates to our home. The popcorn ceiling in the family room needs to go, it’s dirty and hasn’t been painted since the house was built almost 20 years ago. The carpet is disgusting, also original to the house. While we love having a fireplace we feel like it could stand out a little more in this larger space.
Just a reminder, this is what it looked like when we looked at the house 7 years ago!
Recently we installed new quartz counter tops in the kitchen. After seven years we are ready to install a back splash instead of the fake one we did with a sharpie marker pictured above. I am having some commitment issues on that. We are also wanting to paint the lower cabinets and remove some upper cabinets and install floating shelves possibly.
We have a daughter graduating at the end of May so we figured this was the perfect time to get the space where we want it before we host a graduation party. Also probably the worst time to decide to do this but if you know me, this is where I thrive! This is perhaps why I don’t have an amazing mood board for you this week. But check back! Chaos baby!
In the next 6 weeks we have a lot to do!
Scrape Popcorn off the ceiling
Install Shiplap and Beams on ceiling
Demo the Fireplace and pull it out further into the room
Create a Fireplace Surround
Tile or Stone the fireplace
Tear out carpet and tile in front of fireplace
Install new carpet and tile
Install a light fixture in the family room
Figure out where the tv is going
Paint lower cabinets
Install backsplash
Remove upper cabinets
Install floating shelves
Possibly new wall color – still deciding
Make it look pretty/style and accessorize everything
As you can see, we have a lot to do in a short amount of time. Granted this space isn’t super ugly but just needs some updates. We already started working on the ceiling in the living room by scraping the popcorn off. More on that next week!
Don’t forget to follow along with everyone else participating. It’s going to be a crazy 6 weeks! I can’t wait to see the end results. Click here to visit the ORC and the amazing design influencers who are taking on the challenge!
