Faux Sharpie Herringbone Back Splash for $3

February 3, 2016

Last week we purchased some new appliances for our home after our microwave of 4 years died.  We decided it was the right time to also purchase a gas range and dishwasher as those weren’t the best either. Don’t ask me about my Samsung kitchen appliances because I hated them and now we only have the fridge left which isn’t horrible.  It drops random ice cubes out of the dispenser all the time but the dogs usually eat those so it’s not ruining my hardwood floor, yet.  BUT I am very thankful for my appliances and even the ones that didn’t always work the best.  After the gas range was installed I started thinking about how I was missing a back splash and it’s going to be a while before I can have a real one.   I did the chalkboard back splash a few years ago and loved it for a while but when I repainted the kitchen I also painted over the back splash.

subway tile, chalkboard, gray and white kitchen cabinets, DIY, painted cabinets

Mallory from A Beautiful Mess did a faux herringbone back splash with a sharpie and I knew that was exactly what my kitchen needed.  Not that my kitchen looked bad before this, it just needed a little something something.

So during the blizzard yesterday I painted my back splash area white, asked my neighbor for a triangle, found some sharpies and used a subway tile we had in the basement to create my faux back splash.  My hubby helped me out a ton by drawing about 1/2 the tiles for me and we did mess up under the microwave but we’re not fixing it, it is what it is.

Not a drastic change but definitely adds a little something to the kitchen!   This project cost me $2.47 as I had to go buy some sharpies to finish it.  Not bad for a few hours of my time and less than $3!  The look of the new range helps too.

Next up, I am researching painting my counter tops as it will probably be a year or two before we can replace them.  They are chipped, stained and kind of looking beige ugly now that they are surrounded by white.  Anyone have luck painting laminate counter tops?

Did you have an electric stove before?? And if so did you have a gas line run for your new stove? I am wanting to replace my electric stove with a gas one and wondered if was going to bea major deal!! Thanks!

Yes we had to have a line run and the supplies alone were about $200 not including labor. Thankfully we have a friend who does HVAC so he was able to do it for us and we paid him.

That looks so awesome! I can’t believe you did that with a sharpie! I have thought about painting my countertops many times but never did. I was so afraid the paint would peel off! Now we are finally getting new counters and I’m glad I waited. BTW, I love your house and how you decorate. I’m always stalking your blog and Instagram for ideas!
