Soon, our backyard will be filled with the sounds of construction as they dig out our yard and pour the concrete patio. I’m SO excited! I’ve been waiting for this day for two years.
When we first started imagining the backyard, this photo from BHG was my biggest inspiration. I love the look of the curtains on the patio, all the plants and that bright and airy yet somehow defined and cozy feeling from the pergola.
Creating useable, pretty and peaceful spaces where our family and friends can hang out while on a small budget is super high on our list.
That’s because the rest of our backyard is kind of hard to utilize. The yard is not flat, so games like bags aka cornhole and can jam are kind of hard to play. We are often left playing games on the side of our house. The fact is they kind of sucked at grading the yard.
Moving into a model home was nice but there was nothing in the backyard as far as a deck or patio for entertaining. The summer of 2020 was all about making it work. And using the flat space while we could.
In March of 2021 we started on the deck. Which we have absolutely loved having! It definitely has given us a space for entertaining and just hanging out.
while the deck gave us outdoor space, the patio was still on my list of wants. I really enjoy having a walkout basement, but it’s been tough with mud and grass from the dogs and kids coming into through the basement door onto the carpet.
Our best grass grows under the deck and it’s a nice shaded hang out spot when it’s hot out. But we don’t really use this space. That is until a few weeks ago my husband purchased an inflatable hot tub on amazon. He’s wanted one for a few years and he finally decided to just go for it.
Obviously the patio will make this space feel more legit and we have some other fun plans for here too.
Adding privacy will be our main goal. Slat walls, landscaping and curtains will definitely help create privacy and create the cozy vibe we want for here.
On the side of the patio area where the boulders are located, we plan to add landscaping on the sloped part and then above the boulders as well to create a privacy hedge.
Then on the side with the staircase we will be doing some sort of lattice or slat wall to block off that side as well.
Finally, we plan to add some storage under the deck stairs.
Flat space in the yard is scarce but I am going there’s enough to add an above ground pool. Now I know it’s not an in-ground pool but I loved my above ground pool!
I basically want to jump in the pool after going for a walk or gardening when I’m drenched in sweat. On a beautiful summer day I love grabbing a book and a beverage and float around in the sun.
Hopefully we will be adding an above ground pool to the backyard next spring.
In the meantime, I am excited to work on the backyard and continue to carry out the vision we have for this space.
