Delighting our way through summer

Living in the mid-west there is in the back of our minds this pressure that when summer arrives, you must make the most of it!   After all you’ve survived winter just for these precious few months of sunshine and warmth but not too warm, not like down south.  I mean, why do people live here?  Nothing beats summertime in the mid-west.  That’s what we all say.  And it’s true, when January and February are freezing cold, snowy and dragging on, we remind ourselves, summer is coming full of sunshine and warmth.  When summer arrives, it’s time to cram all the activities in and be outside as much as possible.  We neglect indoor chores and projects because summer is here and it’s going fast.

With all that said, every summer seems to fly by, traveling, baseball, company visiting and everyday life. Surely with only one child at home  who can drive himself places our summer will slow down?  I’ve realized that is not the case.  And it’s my fault.  Well I think my husband contributes to this as well, we simply can’t chill.  We’ve tried.  Honestly, we like being busy and having things to do.  Which is good because we’ve been busy this summer.  We have had so much company and we love it but I did not include pics of anyone because I don’t know if they want to be in a blog post.  But know that we were delighted you choose to spend time with us!

Theme of the summer, coffee!  Ok maybe not but I have so enjoyed coffee with friends, coffee on my deck or porch and checking out new places out of town.  Supporting local businesses, enjoying a new drink and spending time with people I love, sounds perfectly delightful!

It’s a been a summer of fun with checking out some local things like Wicked at the Orpheum and a MN United FC Soccer game.  We know nothing about soccer but it was fun!  I love the arts and sports so it’s always a delight to find these events near us.  We have had Allianz field on our list for a while and for a random Wednesday night in August it was almost full!

Speaking of sports….I’ve been doing some golfing this summer!  And I love it!  Part of the fun is I get to golf with my guys and to my delight, I’m actually not too bad of a golfer.

We were also able to attend the 3M Open again this year which was so fun!  The weather was, dare I say, delightful!

Did I mention we also moved two kids in and out of apartments?  Our van, she’s old and she’s trusty.  She’s also a workhorse!  220,000 some miles and she’s still holding strong.  So many adventures with this vehicle, she’s in retirement and will live the rest of her life with us.  Not to mention she’s also been a great backup vehicle for our kids when they need it.  What a delight that we can help our kids out!

One thing that we have done this summer is take little day date trips, sometimes it’s only 35 minutes away but it’s fun to explore all the area has to offer.  Sometimes we get it in our heads that we need to leave to do the fun things but really there’s so much to do and see right here in our own backyard.

But there’s also something to be said about staying home and enjoying our own space, especially when we have so many great spaces!  Weirdly enough, I’ve also been delighting in cooking.  Probably because I’ve been able to use fresh herbs from my planter and vegetables from the garden which has been so nice.  We’ve also been trying out some different recipes which has been fun.

Speaking of the garden, growing everything from seeds this spring with my little helper has really  just brought me endless joy and seeing the delight on her face makes it even better.  But beyond the garden it’s been fun to watch baby robins hatch and fledge, twice.   We also found a few caterpillars on the milkweed in my native plant garden that are now in  their cocoon and waiting to hatch anytime now.  And I’m really hoping that this is a pumpkin growing that we can carve in October.  And there’s nothing like enjoying the fruits of your labor. She loves to eat the cherry tomatoes from the garden.

Finally, it is a delight but also such a wild transition as our last baby is a senior this year.  Feeling all the feels over here.  I have a lot more to blog about this soon.
