If you missed Road Tripping Part 1, click on the link to read about the start of vacation. I don’t want to bore anyone to tears but at the same time, this is my blog and also kind of like a scrapbook of sorts, so if you don’t want to read about our vacation, I’m so not offended but if you do, then read on! Or if you are having trouble sleeping, this could be just the thing to help you fall asleep!
We ended up meeting my parents in Nashville, they drove down from Michigan a few days earlier as my dad was attending the National Sheriff’s Convention the same time we were driving through to Atlanta. From the moment we drove into Nashville both Alex & I were in love with this town. I mean any place that has Waffle House is a hit in my book. I know some of you don’t like the Waffle House but I happen to LOVE the Waffle House! Some of the children (ok, the oldest) look less than thrilled to be eating here but they too love Waffle House. seriously.
Cheap, greasy, good tasting food, what more can you ask for? Jalepenos in your omelette? Why yes, they have that too! Yummy!
The zoo in Nashville was quite fabulous, even on a hot day in June. We spent about five hours exploring the zoo, riding the carousel and even touring an old plantation house on the property.
we paid extra to do the Dino Trek and it was well worth it. The kids loved walking through, although the first time we went through the J-man was a bit freaked out. His sisters’ did a great job explaining how the dinosaurs aren’t real even though they moved and made sounds, some even sprayed you with water. The Dino Trek was such a hit with the kids, we went through it again before we left the zoo.
Another great place to go is the Belle Meade Plantation. The stables, slave cabins, gardens and mansion are all really fun to explore. They have tour guides dressed in period clothing that do a wonderful job of making history come alive. The kids really enjoyed this as well, even if Little A’s face looks a little grumpy in the photo.
I’ve always loved history, being in the South and touring the plantations, reading about the Confederacy and seeing all this history, confirmed to me that I was supposed to be born in the South. Or maybe I just need to talk my family into moving to the South. Have you been to Nashville? Do you live “Down South?” Can I live in the South with my almost Canadian accent and also I don’t eat peach or pecan pie? What is up with the boiled green peanuts I see advertised? Help a northener out y’all!

I love the South, too! Living in Ohio my whole life, I only get to visit. Luckily my older sis has lived in both N. Carolina and Tennessee. Right now she lives in Tennessee (for the second time) and the other sissies and I, along with our daughters, are going down there on a girls-only road trip in July. Yippee! Your story about visiting the plantations brought back a vivid memory of my poor mom wanting to see a plantation on the way home from Myrtle Beach. Of course my sisters and I thought it was lame and complained. In her being upset with us, she backed over a cannonball that was there for show in the driveway of the plantation! Our station wagon was stuck on it! I was sitting in the back seat and the floor in front of me was literally sticking up many inches because the cannonball was underneath there!!! That was quite the memory. Glad your visit to the plantation was a little less uneventful! 🙂

I live an hour from Savannah, born and bred in the South!! I love that so many people love the South. Come on down and visit us and stay a while, we love company! Boiled peanuts are the best!! My family calls them warm salty mush. 🙂 In the little town I live in we have an annual peanut festival. Cotton and peanuts are big in our area. Did you know Savannah gained a lot of it’s wealth back in the day from cotton? The south has lots of different kinds of bugs, gnats, sand gnats, misqitoes, flies, bugs in general and hot as blue blazes, but it is what makes it the south. Living in the South you learn to share the road during harvesting season with the large tractors. Nothing like going down a road, only to have a big green machine come at ya! It is okay that you don’t eat peach pie or pecan pie, I don’t like the peaches either. So glad ya’ll came and stayed a while, and are enjoying our great side of this wonderful country we live in! Oh and KK is the best!!! Nothing like going by one late at night and seeing the Hot and Now sign on.

I’m an hour away from Nashville at Ft. Campbell, the kids and I were at the zoo Saturday for about 5 hours also. My son was explaining the same thing to my oldest daughter about the dinosuars. Glad you enjoyed the visit! If you are ever in the area again I recommend going through the Opryland Hotel, they have a river with water in it from all over the country and other parts of the world, and other things to do and see. Would you believe I’ve lived here five years and still haven’t eaten at Waffle House?

You would fit right in and in no time you would have a northern twang. Wait, could that ever happen? I’ve heard you say “Bag” in your northern accent, it’s hilarious!
Glad you are having a great vacation and what a better way to see the states. How’s hubby liking the south?

So awesome! We lived in Nashville when I was little while my dad went to Vanderbilt. It remains one of the best cities in my opinion.
Oh and huge Waffle House fan right here. I love a good Waffle House waffle. I know people go for the hash browns, but there’s something about those thin pancakey waffles that does it for me.

You guys really got around the whole south, didn’t you?! Man your kids are so stinkin cute.

Sounds like a fun trip and the kids are enjoying their summer – very cute, by the way. We attempted to visit a plantation – my first time – last summer outside of Charleston, SC, but there was a huge thunderstorm and flooding and the property lost electricity so they could not even process ticketing.
