It’s time to reflect back on 2017 and all that we did and did not accomplish in our home this year. I did not do a Home Goals blog post for 2017 and I really wish I would have. If I would have, it was this, figure out a way to use my home to the best of it’s ability and create a tranquil, peaceful home. The two rooms I have struggled with the most, the front living room and the basement play area were specifically on my list. I did write that down, just not on the blog!
I love our home but the struggle has been finding ways to balance having four kids who create a lot of noise, mess and chaos with the need for some quiet and calm. I think I did it!
Removing the playroom and turning it into my studio was awesome.
No more room full of junk that nobody is playing with, no more toys spread around like confetti from New Years, no more of me nagging and yelling about the state of the playroom!
So, I am quite happy to report that this year, my word of the year helped me make my home even more lovely than it was last year! I created a quiet, peaceful home, a studio for my new business and an overall feeling of joy that rooms in my home are finally finding their purpose!
The first project we completed was finally finishing the laminate flooring in the hallway upstairs. Carpet can be great but with my allergies and my son’s allergies, removing the original dog pee stained carpet was really for the best.
That carpet was so disgusting! Seriously. This is embarrassing.
We also scraped popcorn ceiling and added these pretty new light fixtures to replace the boob lights.
This hallway is making me happy! It’s taken six years to get it to this point but I am so very happy with it! And, big surprise, I repainted the hallway to match the entryway, Porous Stone by Dunn Edwards color matched into Sherwin Williams.
Another small change was trading out the boob lights for these beautiful lights! The bonus, they were on clearance at Lowes earlier this year for $16 each! I mean, that is so cheap and I love them!
The front entryway and front door were repainted, along with the front living room which was done like 3 different times. Oops.
We had a mishap with a can of stain that ended up ruining the basement stairs carpeting so we had new carpeting installed in the basement and also the front living room.
Which of course, led to the fall ORC living room makeover. More on that in a moment. The new carpet is so soft and comfy, it’s really such a change from the original rough, hard and dog pee stained berber carpeting that was down there.
Finally, our biggest change this year was the front living room. This room has been in transition for the past 7 years in our home. Towards the end of 2016 we were using it with our IKEA furniture and it was nice to have two rooms with televisions.
Then I purchased a sectional from Costco, we joined the fall ORC and this is what we ended up with, our french country boho living room.
Honestly, there are not a lot of big projects left in our home. Counter tops in the kitchen, the mudroom and laundry room, the fireplace living room, bathrooms and scraping more popcorn ceiling. After that it’s all boring stuff like landscaping and outdoor lighting. So stay tuned to see what’s on our 2018 Home Goals list!
