Black Interior Doors

The other day when I looked at my powder room door and so how gross, dirty and blah it looked, I grabbed my paint brush, some black ACE Cabinet, Door & Trim paint and decided I’d had enough. I already have a few black doors in our home, the french doors and also the insides of our exterior doors are black.

There are only two doors on the main floor besides the french doors so the pantry door now has black paint on it as well.  I’m not completely sold on the pantry door but it works for now and ties in the chalkboard backsplash.

I was a little worried the chalkboard wall might be too much black with the pantry door but I think it’s ok.

Here you can see the black doors all tied together.  This is when I like my pantry door black, consistency, flow, oneness.

This shot ties in the french doors from the dining room with the pantry and the powder room door.

Here’s when we first moved in just to give you an idea of how far the kitchen and also my photography skills have come in almost two years:

The bathroom door is perfect in the hall, I was worried it might be too dark but it works and makes the zebra walls look lovely.

Then while taking photos, I was bombed by my hubby on his way up to shower on his lunch break.  I told him it was going on the blog, him unshowered and in his glory, so here it is honey.

Have I ever told you how much I love this view?  It makes me happy, every. single. time.    LOVE my chalkboard back splash!

Let’s see a before just to remind us how far it’s come.  This is when we were first looking at the house, one of the only pictures I have from this view before I changed the trim and added our coat shelf.

Then we added white trim, the coat shelf and the white door for the powder room.

And here we are today, gray owl on the walls, painted cabinets and now a black powder room door.

So there you have it, a few hours on Sunday and I totally changed the look of my home for free!  Do you have black doors in your home?  Would you ever try it?

The Kitchen Cabinets are Painted!

After my Rustoleum Cabinet Transformations Failure, I needed to finish up the kitchen cabinets before we left on vacation.  Last night when we should have been going over the packing list and stuffing more goldfish into snack bags, we were instead putting cabinet drawer fronts and doors back on the frames in the kitchen.  For reasons like this, I love my husband more than he can know.  He has been driving me nuts carefully checking our packing list everyday for a while now, adding things to it, asking questions and making sure we don’t forget anything.   I on the other hand, prefer the wing it at the last minute approach.  Somehow we have made it work, although we haven’t had to actually pack the vehicle yet, that’s when it gets a little dicey.   It looks like we might be ready to go except the suitcases over there are empty and that laundry basket  of clothing needs to get put away and the blue hamper of clothes, those are awaiting their turn in the washing machine.

Last night I was running around picking up last minute items like a giant dog bowl for water, deodorant and lip gloss.  All very important items.  I also had a fabulous time at Olive Garden with the MOPS leadership team, I’m really looking forward to this coming year!

So I snapped a few pics of the kitchen this morning to share with you.  No hardware on the cabinets yet, although I know what ones I want.  Martha Stewart at Home Depot in brass is where it’s at baby.  I tried one little egg knob out on the drawer with the gray and I love it!   These photos are spur of the morning, quick take a pic, kind of photos.

Just a reminder of what it looked like a few short months ago:

I’m liking the blue chairs with the gray, so glad I waited before deciding to change the color!

Just so you know, I threw most of the stuff that was on the counter over into the corner where the hermit crabs live, I even am throwing in a pic, just to keep it real.  Now I’m off to pack, do some laundry and get ready for our first ever big family vacation!

The color of the cabinets is Desert Twilight (more of a green/gray color) by Benjamin Moore, located on the same card as the wall color, Gray Owl.   I used Ace Cabinet Trim and Door Paint on the bottom cabinets along with two coats of primer.  So far so good!  I’ll keep you updated on how they hold up as we continue to work on the kitchen.  Next up, hardware, a new faucet and backsplash.  Eventually new countertops, lighting and a rug.  What do you think?  Love it?  Hate it?  Unsure?

Tomorrow I’ll be back with a Blooming Blogger post and from there on out it’ll be random posting at best.  If you follow me on Instagram or fb, I’m sure you’ll catch some updates and pictures of our vacation and of course HAVEN!  So excited to meet my bloggy friends in real life!   Are you going to be at Haven?

Painting the Kitchen Chairs

With only 12 days to go before we hit the road and tour some of the US of A, painting the bottom half of the kitchen cabinets seemed like a great idea to me.  Too bad my husband didn’t agree with me and most of my friends.  So I listened to reason for once and didn’t start painting the cabinets.  Instead I decided to paint my kitchen chairs.  A few years ago they were honey oak but after a few coats of black spray paint and some poly they were looking 10o times better.  You can imagine the abuse these chairs suffer on a daily basis with 4 kids and 2 dogs that try to scratch at leftover crumbs left on the seats.  I also may have occasionally used these chairs for painting.  Ruby may also have mistaken the legs for bones a few times.  The abuse was taking it’s toll.

My first attempt was to make a DIY AS Chalk Paint with Plaster of Paris.  I found a recipe, thought their furniture looked great so gave it a whirl.  I browsed my paint store cans in the basement and thought maybe the coral from our nightstands would be cool.  The paint did not go on well, did not dry well at all and did not cover the black well.  Paint fail!  (Thank you instagram for capturing my paint failure when I’m in the middle of a mess and don’t want to head inside for the nice, expensive camera.)

Back to the drawing board!  I grabbed the Galapegos Turquoise from the cloffice and mixed some plaster of paris and water again, added in the paint and went to town on my chairs.  The reason I wanted to try this chalk paint is that there is no sanding, priming or prep really at all except for making sure the furniture you are painting is clean.

They turned out much better this time around!  I did not distress the chairs at all but just rubbed some minwax wood polish over them.   I posted this pic on fb the other night for feedback and why does my mudroom look like the color of bile?

I’m not in love with the look of the chairs, the paint color seems almost green in some light.  I added some lemons to the table with a placemat to see if it helped any.  Once the bottoms of the cabinets are painted I think I might like the table and chairs.

The table color is staying for now, I’m waiting until after the cabinets are painted before I decide if I like the chairs/table with the cabinets.  Then, after painting the bottom cabinets gray, it  is either find new stools for the counter or repainting those ones and finding some oilcloth fabric for the seat cushions.

Have you tried painting with AS Chalk paint or have you made your own?  I’d love to hear what you think about it!

My Kitchen Failure and Rustoleum Cabinet Transformations

UPDATE:   Rustoleum refunded me my money for the kit and I sanded down the areas that were peeling off, primed and painted over the peeled areas as well as all the top cabinets that were already painted with Rustoleum again with the Ace Cabinet, Trim & Door Paint.  The lower cabinets I primed and then painted with the Ace paint in Desert Twilight, no sanding, just washing them down well beforehand.  The cabinets are holding up really well, no chipping or streaking or peeling.  You can see a photo of my kitchen since I’ve painted it with the Ace Paint.

I am familiar with painting oak and cabinets for those of you who maybe questioning my painting experience or accusing me of bad prep, etc.   I painted our bathroom vanity ,  our oak trim and mantel and of course our kitchen which has turned out beautifully with the Ace Cabinet Paint.  All of the items I have painted are holding up well to 4 kids and 2 dogs in a busy house.  Thank you to all of you who have had the same problems, it appears that the light kits are causing some problems for people but the dark kits are doing well for everyone.   Not everyone is having a bad experience with the light kits, some of you have used the kits and they’ve turned out great and I”m very happy for you.  You can read below my original post about the problems I experienced with the Rustoleum Kit.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

A few weeks ago I posted my kitchen plans, paint the top cabinets white and the bottom cabinets gray.  I purchased two Rustoleum Cabinet Transformations Kits a few months ago and couldn’t wait to get started.

I watched the DVD, removed all my cabinet doors, hardware and hinges, labeled all the doors and corresponding hardware in baggies, filled in the holes where my hardware was located and then sanded the filler down.   I washed and scrubbed my cabinets and frames with soap and water.  I then deglossed them vigorously, scrubbing until my hands ached and would lock up, making sure I did this step correctly as it is the most important step in the process so that your paint “bonds” to the wood.  I wiped them down with the lint free cloths I purchased just for this project.  I dried them and did everything exactly as it was laid out in the directions.

Next was setting up a spot for the cabinet doors to rest on while they were being painted.

I painted the first coat of bond paint on with my Purdy brush that I love and have used on my trim and doors with great results.  The first coat went on ok and I figured after another coat it would look better.

The kit says you only need two coats of the bond coat but I wasn’t loving the look so I thought I’d do three.  While three was better it still wasn’t the look I was going for.  The paint looks streaky and not uniform.  After reading online a bit more, it seems that this happens with the lighter kits and that is why the glaze is recommended, to hide the inconsistency of the paint.

It’s hard to see on the computer screen but I did have a friend come over today and she confirmed that the cabinets definitely are streaky looking and I’m not crazy.  Ok well she didn’t say I wasn’t crazy, just the cabinets are for sure streaky looking and need more paint.

If the streaking wasn’t fun enough, I then discovered that the bond coat apparently hasn’t bonded properly as I could very easily peel off the paint from the cabinet.

Now I”m not sure where to go with the cabinets from here.  Do I need to sand them all down and start over?  If I do I will definitely be following the Young House Love tutorial and using my beloved Benjamin Moore paint.

Can I just paint over the bond coat with maybe my Ace Cabinet and Trim Paint?  This could work but now that the bond coat is peeling off I am worried I’ll just be putting a bandage over a really big gaping wound that will soon burst it’s infection all over in my kitchen.

I’m going to wait a few days and see if the bond coat “cures” and if it doesn’t then I will be sanding them all down and starting over.   The next few days are going to be busy around here, Our daughter E is having her birthday party on Saturday and then we are having our friends that are pretty much our family sleep over Sunday night.   Oh yes, and we are going to try and get the pool up and filled this weekend too.

We leave in a few weeks for the Blogging Conference and our first big family vacation and I’d love to have the cabinets done before we leave but I’m not sure if that is even a realistic goal at this point.   Sorry for the downer post, I know a few of you have already purchased your RustoleumCabinet Transformation kits, maybe you’ll have better luck than I did.  I am still waiting to hear back from Rustoleum on this and they are 100% satisfaction guranteed, which is nice.   After talking with a few people it seems that the darker kits work well and maybe it’s the lighter kits when you don’t use the glaze that are not working out so well.
Have you used Cabinet Transformations?  Did you like it?  Have you painted your cabinets the old fashioned way?  I’m curious to hear about your experiences!

Random Stuff and a Peek at the Gray Owl Paint

I’m popping in quick to remind you that GFC is going away for me this week as I am in the process of getting a blog redesign and moving to WordPress. You can follow me through RSS feed, email or fb which is all located on the right hand side of the blog.
You would think with a blog redesign and moving to WP going on and just finishing the bub’s room last week that I wouldn’t be diving into anything else. Well I like to keep busy as I started painting the family room/kitchen and front entryway yesterday. The color I chose is Benjamin Moore Gray Owl which is a very light light gray. There were a few other colors I debated on but Gray Owl was showing up as a true gray compared to the other choices like Coventry Gray, Stonington Gray and MS Bedford Gray.
Here are a few shots from this morning, it’s cloudy out so not the best light for taking picture and my house is obviously not ready for a photo shoot so I threw some stuff up on the mantle and called it good.

Yesterday I was unsure of the color but I do like it today. Usually I go for bold colors so having a light color is quite a change for me. One of the only things the hubby and I don’t like is that the white trim doesn’t seem to pop like it did with the beige that was already on the walls. What do you think?

Next up is trying the Ektorp in here vs the leather.  I moved the blue chair out of the corner and tried an ektorp.  Stay tuned for more updates on the ever evolving family room!  I’ll be back tomorrow to share about a great gift I received in the mail this week.

Master Bedroom Update (again) Painted Nightstands

One day this room will be complete and the title will read Master Bedroom Complete! You won’t even know what to do with yourself because this room has been progressing since November. Really I’m so close to being done, I just need some artwork and to figure out a bedskirt.  The last update from a few weeks ago I suggested it was time to paint the nightstands and you all gave me such wonderful color ideas. I tried green but it wasn’t looking so great. Next choice was coral and we found a winner!

Just a refresher, here is the room a few short months ago, a mish mash of stuff with some temporary red curtains, boring beige walls that looked like purple poop at night and the nightstands I found for $35 total.

The color of the nightstands is Benjamin Moore Rhubarb.  I used a semi-gloss paint to get more of a glossy sheen on them.

I used some rub n buff to goldify the handles of our nightstands.  They were somewhat gold but it was a bit tarnished, this brought the gold factor up a level and it has a little more pop now.

Here is the nightstand before and after:

Thanks for all your help with the nightstands!  I think they look so much better and add a nice punch of color to the room.  What do you think?

Guest Post: The Blooming Hubs Rants about "The Wood"

OK, it’s high-time that I took over Ange’s job of blogging for once.  Yup, that’s right, the Blooming Hubs is doing a not-so-hostile takeover of a Blooming Hydrangea post.  Don’t tell my most darling wife, whom we all have come to love (hey, I loved her first y’all, just sayin’)!

While I have the podium and before I get into today’s subject du jour, let me take this opportunity to publicly acknowledge a few things:

  • My wife is an amazing person.  For those that know her, this comes as no surprise, but for those that don’t you’re missing out.  I am truly blessed to be married to this energetic, fun-loving girl who gets me motivated to “do projects” where I would otherwise probably just play Nintendo and watch football if left to my own devices.  Darling, I love you and what you’ve done in our house, with our familiy, and with this blog – you make me proud!!
  • Secondly, let me acknowledge what life is like as a blog spouse.  It’s a bit crazy around here at times with a stray paint brush found in random places, random trips to the store to find just the right pillow, and hours spent wading through Pinterest (who invented that thing anyway?) to come up with more “hubby do” projects.  I also live in fear at times that what I say or do may end up getting blogged about for the enjoyment of y’all (“Honey, don’t make me publish that picture of you with the weird cups over your eyes after your eye surgery!”).  But it is truly a fun community of great people most of whom I may never meet in person but yet have come to know second hand through Ange’s blog, and being a technology geek that I am I really love to see the internet used like that!  Kudos to all you creative bloggers out there (including Ange, of course) taking such a simple thing as blogging and turning it into a gold mine of ideas, inspiration, and just plain fun.
  • Lastly, for the record, I am NOT from the south, but I do apparantly like to use the word “y’all” a lot just because of how it rolls off the tongue or something.  Not quite sure why..

OK, now time for the message at hand, it’s time to have the man-talk with the hubbies/boyfriends out there who are a bit squeamish about the subject.  Today’s topic is about painting the sacred wood that we have in our homes and learning to be OK with this.  Guys (if you’re reading this, or if your wife/girlfriend is reading it to you as I suspect is happening) we’re going to take this a step at a time and go through this and I’m hoping by the end you’ll at least begin to appreciate that painted wood (i.e. trim, cabinets, etc.) is just as fine to enjoy as seeing the wood underneath the paint as well.

And before I move on I must also acknowledge the fact that “painting the wood” may have some sort of sexual innuendo, which is not my intention at all but if y’all want to take it there after reading this post, be my guest.  Hmmmmm…..ANYWAY….

(That’s not a self-portrait, by the way, just some random picture I found on Google)

Alright, let me go back to the “dark ages” in my life, before I saw the light, so to speak.  The first house that Ange and I bought together was a 60′s ranch loaded with oak trim, all stained and in it’s Oak glory.  Cabinets as well were oak-ish and woodly,  It was there that I first dug my heels when the budding interior decorator known as my wife first suggested that we consider painting “the wood”.  She might as well have suggested that we start shaving my leg hair and making me wear heels, it wasn’t gonna happen.  So we lived in oak glory for a few years and somehow made it work.

Then came the house that we built together.  Skip to the part where we pick out the trim and doors style for the house.  I don’t recall exactly the conversations we had about this (I’m a guy and the memory about that sort of stuff just eludes me.  Yet I can remember every sports score my favorite team had this year…odd) but at some point she convinced me that using white trim and white six-panel doors was in order.  I was hesitant, but began to see the beauty of white trim when our house started to come together and I saw how wonderful the white trim made the paint on the walls stand out and how it just seemed to add such a great touch to rooms that would otherwise have been rather boring and plain.  From there, our next house had white kitchen cabinets (in addition to a house full of white trim) and now we are living in a house where we are actually painting the trim white (well, Ange is anyway.  A man’s gotta have his limits on doing projects somewhere, ya know) and we have the kit to transform our cabinets into white at some point in the near future.

I’m not suggesting, by the way, that white is the only way to go, there are certainly many more colors that can be utilized just as well, especially for cabinets.  But the reason that I’m on the soapbox today is because I hear through Ange that many husbands/boyfriends are afraid to let their significant others paint “the wood” and I think it’s just plain silly.  Speaking as a former wood conservative I am telling you that it’s OK to let go, I promise you’ll learn to love the painted trim/cabinets/doors as much as I have.  It really changes the look of the house in a way that few other simple updates can.  We have had many compliments from friends who have visited before and afterwards about how amazing the transformation is with the white over the oak.  And I also promise, the same essence of “the wood” is still there, it hasn’t gone anywhere when you paint it.  Let me ask you this:  Say you have a 1960′s sports car in great condition, nice engine, great tires and interior.  If someone puts a new paint job on the car, does that ruin the essence of the car or enhance it?  I think you know what I mean.  Underneath it all, the same oak/maple/pine is still there, it’s just been upgraded!

A quick little before and after so you can appreciate the beauty of the white trim/doors:

Anyway, wrapping up guys, just a plea to let go of the wood trim and live a little.  You may just make your wife/girlfriend so happy that she may come up with other things to do with “the wood” if you know what I mean…wink….wink…nudge…nudge!  OK, reached my innuendo quota required by the blogger union, time to wrap this post up.

(That’s not a self-portrait of me, either.  Although there is some resemblance there!)
Thanks to my darling Ange for letting me hijack her site for this guest post!
Peace out blogland,
The Blooming Hubs

Master Bedroom Progress

Good Afternoon friends!  I am really excited to show you what we did in the closet this past weekend. (Get your minds out of the gutter, people).  This is our closet before my great idea. Vanilla, boring, gross wire shelving and some bad photography.  Some of these pics are from my camera phone.  I am at the end of my rope with my Kodak, it literally eats batteries and I can not hardly use my camera anymore.  Earlier today I had visions of smashing it in the middle of the road with a hammer and then running it over again and again.  (I think I have PMS).

This is the closet after my great idea.  It took some awesome Scotch Blue Edgelock tape and my wonderful hubby who did the hard part, figuring out the math for the stripes and then measuring and drawing the lines on the wall.  I had the easy part, putting the tape on the walls, painting and taking the tape off.

I LOVE IT!

Ok, well here is how it really looks right now once we added back in some of the wire shelving, our clothes and a dresser.  I convinced him we didn’t need all that shelving in there because it makes it hard to see the stripes. I am not sure if the dresser is staying in there or not yet, we are experimenting with that.  I asked the hubs to not put the door to the closet back on either because I want to admire my stripes at night while in bed.

I found this online at ana-white.com the other day and I’m hoping the hubby will want to build it in our closet sometime soonish and after we find an extra $200 in the budget.

I’ll post a few before and afters of how the bedroom looks now with white trim.  We are hoping to be able to start purchasing the white six panel hollow core doors in a few weeks.  That will also make a huge difference in the look!

I am having a lamp dilemma and I’m sure I’ll figure it out but here is a side by side of the current black lamps and the lamps from the family room.  I think we need some taller lamps in here but the hubby loves the black lamps.  One of the options is, I put the black lamps on top of some books for height.  The bubs was not cooperating so I just let him be on the bed while I shot some pics.

I also had this big furry beast on my bed too, they always want to be where the action is.  Ahem.

Next on the list for the bedroom is replacing the doors, figuring out what I want on the walls and what I’m doing with lamps.  I also would like a blanket of some sort for the end of the bed, curtains that are not red and left over from the previous owners, some pillows and a bed skirt. Also need to figure out what to do with dresser and if we should add some other furniture to the blank wall where the dresser used to be.  I’m thinking the rest of the room is going to move slowly for a few months and I’m ok with that.
The hubby would like some dark brown hardwood floors too and so would I but I think that is for another year.
And now onto the failure of the weekend, the bathroom vanity of doom. This is what it looked like before I painted it, just a standard builder oak vanity.

Here is after with a bad color choice on my part, thank you Rustoleum Kona Brown.  Who knew that it would look like purple/chocolate pudding?  Not me.

I had some fun on Picnik with stickers, I love that there is a toilet paper roll sticker so I thought this was a perfect time to use it along with the skull and crossbones.

I think maybe the paint fumes have started to do something to my brain.

I love Benjamin Moore Paint!

UPDATE:  You can see our almost finished master bedroom here.

masterbedroom

Last night I decided to paint our bedroom which I was thinking about doing soon when I posted about it a few days. I like to paint on spur of the moment occasions, without much planning or prepping.  The total opposite of my hubby who admitted last night that he likes how I take charge and get stuff done.  He’s a planner and said he’d think about and plan for painting but would probably never actually do it. That’s why we work so well together!

I knew I wanted to paint the walls a navy and after buying three different samples of paint, I finally just headed out to the paint store and thought I’d decide what color to do while I was there. Earlier this week I had some BM paint samples mixed at Home Depot with the Martha Stewart paint.  Yesterday I stopped and purchased a third sample but this one was a Benjamin Moore sample.  The difference in the paint samples blew me away.  The Benjamin Moore sample was awesome.  The other two samples, mediocre at best.  I know that I don’t like Behr Premium Plus Ultra Paint and I refuse to buy it ever again.  I thought maybe Martha Stewart paint would be ok but after using the Benjamin Moore sample, I’m never going back!  On a side note,  I used the Behr paint on my dining room wall and after four months of the paint on the wall, this is what happened, you could literally peel it off the wall.  In the first picture is the large pieces of paint I peeled off.  The second picture is my wall with the brown paint underneath and where I quite easily was able to peel off the white paint which was on top of the brown.

In this last picture you could see how it just peeled off the wall.  I was so angry but I though maybe I had done something wrong.  I checked with my neighbor who is a professional painter and I did everything right. So I decided to do a little research and I am not the only one to have problems with this paint.  Some poor guy painted his entire exterior of his house and had it peeling off.  I did call Behr and they would gladly replace my paint with some new stuff.  I said no thanks, I’ll just repaint in something else.  I did end up repainting and with the Benjamin Moore Interior Paint  which I had used for the top part of my dining room when we first moved in.  I didn’t have any more problems with peeling paint.  I know that I might have had just a bad batch of paint but I’d rather spend $10 more and buy Benjamin Moore Regal Select Interior which I first used in my cloffice a few weeks ago.
When it was time to pick which brand of paint to use in our Master Bedroom, I knew I really wanted to use the Benjamin Moore again.  So I set off for the paint store and bought Benjamin Moore Regal Select Interior in Hale Navy.
I painted my bedroom last night in about three hours or so from start to finish.  The paint looks amazing, went on like a dream and didn’t smell, at all.  It rolls on beautifully, doesn’t splatter at all and cleans up great too.  I couldn’t believe how easily it washed off my hands when I was done.  I painted my entire bedroom, two coats and still have about 1/4 to 1/3 of a gallon of paint left.  My bedroom is 15×15 or maybe a little bigger.  The guy at the paint store told me I would need two gallons of paint but I was being cheap and only bought one.  I’m so glad I did, I have plenty left for touch ups or even a little project. The best part of all this though is, my walls look amazing!  Even the hubby commented on how great the paint looked and if he could tell a difference, then this stuff really is amazing!  He would much prefer I buy the $25 gallon paint from Menards to a $45 gallon paint but I think after tonight, he is a believer in Benjamin Moore too!
I would like to state that I am in no way being compensated by Benjamin Moore for this post.  I am just sharing a product that I love and I would highly recommend to anyone.  In fact, my friend Anne called me yesterday to ask me what brand of paint I use and I told her immediately, Benjamin Moore.  Yes, it is a bit more expensive than something you would buy at a big box retailer like Home Depot or Lowes but I love this paint and think it’s well worth the price!
I thought I’d share a sneak peek with you this morning of the bedroom. My camera battery is dying but I managed to get a few quick pictures last night and one again this morning.  I can’t wait to paint the trim white, the color will really pop then!  Of course this is another keeping it real post, with tools on the bed in one picture and a laptop in another picture.  This is just the tip of the iceberg in this bedroom transformation so stay tuned!

I am in love with this paint color and these pictures don’t do the color justice.  I think part of it is the ugly oak trim but that will be gone soon enough!  I might even get working on that this weekend.  And before I forget, if you aren’t following me on facebook yet, I do post pictures on there  or a sneak peek of what I’m working on that sometimes don’t make it to the blog.  So click on my fb button on the right hand side of my blog under the follow button, I’d love to chat with you on there!

Progress De-Oakifying My House

Good Morning Peeps! I am so happy that I have knocked out another room on my loooonnnnnggggg list of rooms that need trim paint. It started with the entryway and cloffice area and then the powder room. Now I’ve worked my way into the family room and kitchen.
After looking through my photos trying to find pictures of the ugly oakness, I have realized a few things.
1.  I need to organize my photos and delete the ones I don’t need.
2.  I need to take more before pictures.
3.  I need to take better pictures in general and edit them.  I am signing up for a class through the community and hope to improve in this area because I have some really bad pictures on here!
4.  Some of these photos are “real life” happenings around here with dogs in pictures, toys and miscellaneous junk laying around.  I also need to remind myself that some of these were taken the day after we moved in or a few days after moving, my house is not perfect, I am not perfect.  We LIVE here, my house is not going to look like it’s from the cover of a magazine and I don’t want it to look that way.
I did try and use my manual focus settings for the after picture, what do you think, better?
Ok, I’m done talking to myself, moving on to the pictures.

There are wooden blinds for the windows on either side of the patio  door and also for our family room window.  We did not put them back up because the paint needs to dry more but also, I am not sure how they would look now that the window is white.  The blinds are a reddish honey oak color made to match the trim.  Yuck.  I’m thinking of making some Roman Shades for the windows on either side of the patio door and I don’t know what I’ll do with the family room window.  Perhaps nothing, maybe white wood blinds, bamboo roll up shades or something else.  I also can’t wait to get rid of the patio door blinds and replace them with curtains.  The white trim looks so wonderful I am hoping to finish up the main floor next week.  So that would mean the dining room, formal living room and mudroom/laundry room area.  Then we are going to go buy our six panel hollow core doors in white from Home Depot along with a router and some template thing to make the hinge inset on the door panels.  Stay tuned for more updates as we get the first floor done.  My friend Jenny at Building Memories Together just started her kitchen cabinet makeover with Cabinet Transformations in black and I can’t wait to see the end result.   As soon as she’s done, I think I’ll be starting mine!  I’m letting her  experiment use it first and then she can show me how to do it because she’ll be a pro.  My mom arrives later today and I see a trip to IKEA in my future.  Anyone doing any painting this week?
